Professional Background

Barry I. Liskow, M.D., is currently the vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Kansas Medical Center and the director of the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic at The University of Kansas Health System.
He also was the psychiatry residency program director from June 1999 until June 2013.

Dr. Liskow received his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York in 1968. He completed residency training in psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis in 1972. Dr. Liskow served as lieutenant commander (USPHS) and chief of the Psychiatry Service at the Public Health Service Hospital in Seattle from 1972 until 1974. He also spent three years as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Iowa from 1974 until 1979.

Dr. Liskow was a member of the KU faculty from February 1979 until September 1986 with one year of that time spent as the director of residency training. He then held a three-year appointment as professor of clinical psychiatry at Ohio State University College of Medicine. He returned to the University of Kansas in July 1989 as a professor of psychiatry and vice chairman of the department. He was acting chairman from April 1991 until January 1993.

Dr. Liskow has had various hospital appointments, including 27 years of service with the VA system in Iowa City, Kansas City and Columbus, Ohio. His research interests include psychopharmacology and addictive disorders.
