Professional Background

Dr. Bryan Imhoff is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center in the Department of Emergency Medicine. He received a medical degree from the University of Kansas and subsequently completed an Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Imhoff spent 13 years as a management consultant and business leader. He worked for Intel in Silicon Valley and Deloitte Consulting in Chicago. He received an MBA in Finance and Business Strategy at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Chicago. He has expertise in strategic planning, operations, complex analysis and project management.

Dr. Imhoff’s research and quality improvement (QI) interests stem from his non-traditional background and include emergency department (ED) operations and flow, ED staffing, health care administration and finance.

When possible, Dr. Imhoff links his passion for the outdoors with medicine. He is a volunteer physician at Philmont, a 214 square mile adventure base for Boy Scouts in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. He organizes an adventure club for ED residents/attendings/alumni, and he is currently pursuing a Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine.

Research

Overview

Dr. Imhoff’s research and QI interests stem from his non-traditional background and include ED operations and flow, ED staffing, health care administration and finance.

Current projects include:
- Developing program to improve ED Flow
- Effects of COVID on ED patient volumes
- Use of POC testing to reduce patient length of stay (LOS)
- Optimize provider scheduling by matching ED provider capacity to patient volumes
- Reducing patient LOS by shortening time from admission decision to bed request
- Evaluating resident signup behavior on ED patient lengths of stay
- Use of lactate to risk stratify GI bleed patients
