Professional Background

Dr. Smith began teaching full-time with KU School of Nursing in 2021. She teaches in the Undergraduate, RN--BSN, Master's, and Doctoral programs, and she frequently instructs interprofessional students in the health professions programs. She highly values her ability to impact students across the education continuum and aims to connect with each of her students.

Dr. Smith's leadership practice knowledge is backed by over 15 years of experience building and leading high-performing teams. She has a rich practice background in medical telemetry, adult cystic fibrosis, cardiac management, COVID management, renal dialysis, kidney/pancreas transplant, and critical care. She is currently participating in reviewing the KU School of Nursing Masters and Doctoral program curricula. She is also a content expert engaged in revising the Health Systems Leadership Certificate.

Dr. Smith participates in several professional groups, including The Association for Leadership Science in Nursing (ALSN), the American Medical Writers Association, Sigma Theta Tau, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and The Kansas Organization of Nurse Leaders (KONL). She has served as the program committee chair on the board of KONL for five years. In addition to her professional membership, Dr. Smith also enjoys participating as a peer reviewer for The Journal of Nursing Management.

Research

Overview

Dr. Smith is currently involved in a study with our Population Health and Health Informatics faculty and the KU School of Nursing undergraduate program.
She also has interests in studying social and behavioral determinants of health, moral injury in frontline care providers, and how nurse leaders contribute to the development of mentoring culture among their teams.
