Professional Background
Alexander G. Chiu, M.D. is the Russell E. Bridwell, M.D. Endowed Chairman and Professor of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the Founding Scientific Executive Director of the Center for Health Innovation and Transformative Care at the University of Kansas. Prior to his arrival to KU in 2016, he was Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Arizona from 2010-2016, Interim Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Arizona from 2013-2014 and Associate Professor and Director of the Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania from 2003-2010. He has held numerous health system leadership roles, including Secretary of the University of Kansas Physicians Board, co-Chair of Banner-University of Arizona Academic Management Council and University of Arizona Peri-operative Surgical Services Director.
Dr. Chiu's academic and clinical focus is in the field of endoscopic and minimally invasive surgery of the nose, sinuses and skull base. Dr. Chiu completed his medical degree at Albany Medical College and residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Georgetown University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in sinus and skull base surgery at Stanford University.
Dr. Chiu is the past editor-in-chief of ENT Today, past editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy; and the editor of two textbooks: Sinonasal Tumors and Atlas of Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery. He has published over 175 peer reviewed articles and book chapters on sinus and skull base surgery. He is an elected member of the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and serves on the Leadership Council for the Triological Society. In 2021, he was named the inaugural recipient of the #He for She Award given by the Women in Otolaryngology Section of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. This award recognizes a male otolaryngologist who serves as a strong mentor, collaborator and champion of women in otolaryngology. He has also received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and has directed over 15 international rhinologic and skull base CME conferences. He has been an invited speaker around the world, including named lectureships at Stanford, UCLA, University of Utah, Indiana University and the Mayo Clinic.

Research
Overview
Dr. Chiu is actively involved with research involving the topics of chronic rhinosinusitis, sinonasal tumors and outcomes of sinus and skull base surgery. He leads a multi-institutional collaborative on the study of health inequities in Otolaryngology. He is very interested in health care delivery and digital transformation and co-founded the Center for Health Innovation and Transformative Care, a joint SOM/Health system effort to use technology and behavioral insights to improve patient outcomes.
