Eligibility

Non-U.S. citizen international students in their final year of medical school need to meet these eligibility requirements to participate in the Clinical Electives Program.

  • Applicants may not be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

  • At the time of their elective, students must be in their final year of study at their medical school. We are unable to offer clinical rotations to those who have already obtained their Doctorate of Medicine (M.D.) degree. For further study or training in the United States, contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

  • The student must have completed specific clinical training as follows:
    o Internal Medicine (8 weeks)
    o Surgery (8weeks)
    o Family Medicine (8 weeks)
    o Pediatrics (6 weeks)
    o Obstetrics/Gynecology (6 weeks)
    o Psychiatry (4 weeks)
    o Neurology (4 weeks)
    o Geriatrics (4 weeks)

  • All senior international students applying for these electives whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency through either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the academic format of the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). International applicants who are citizens of Great Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or the English-speaking provinces of Canada do not have to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

The TOEFL or IELTS must have been taken within two years of arrival at KU Medical Center. Original test scores must be sent directly from the administering agency to KUMC. Photocopies will not be accepted. For testing purposes, the ETS school code for KUMC is 6895.

Please refer to the following chart for English-proficiency scores on the TOEFL and the IELTS.

Note: There is no separate essay score on the TOEFL-IBT as the essay score is included in the Writing score. Although the TOEFL-IBT includes a speaking component, a minimum score is not required.

GATEWAY is a more affordable online English proficiency test that can be taken anytime and anywhere. You will need a computer with a webcam and speakers and a reliable internet connection.
