Application Process

Follow these six steps to apply for the KU School of Medicine Clinical Electives Program for international students studying medicine.

The Clinical Electives Program helps international students gain practical, hands-on medical skills in a clinical setting while training alongside our KU School of Medicine faculty.

Step 1

Step 2

  • Fill out an application request form.
  • This should be done at least 12 months in advance of when you want to complete a rotation.
  • Please note that a fee of $50 USD will be assessed at the time of the Application Request submission. The fee is mandatory and cannot be waived. This fee will be required for each request that is submitted. Failure to submit the Application Request fee will result in your request not being considered by the Office of International Programs. To visit our payment site, please follow this link.
  • NOTE: Elective Rotations are not available in July, August and September.

Step 3

  • Await your response from the Office of International Programs (OIP).
  • If selected, you will be given an opportunity to complete an application for the Clinical Elective Program.
  • The actual application will be sent out 4-6 months prior to the start of the program.
  • You will be given 2 weeks to complete the application and pay the fees.
  • Choose your TOP 6 rotation choices.
  • There is NO GUARANTEE that you will be granted an elective listed in your top 6 choices.

Step 4

  • Turn in your completed application to the OIP.
  • Pay all non-refundable fees.
    • Application fee - $250
    • Administrative fee - $1000
    • Accommodation fee - $1500
    • All fees are subject to change at the discretion of OIP at any time
  • Submit via email the immunization records as requested by OIP.
  • Only applications with all required documents submitted will be considered complete.
  • Payment must be received by OIP using our FLYWIRE SERVICE and within the allotted time, or the student will not be awarded the elective rotation.
  • Priority will be given to those students who have completed their applications and have paid all their fees.

Step 5

  • Once an elective rotation has been confirmed, an acceptance letter will be sent.
  • The student will complete the additional requirements that we will send in an email.
  • The student will be expected to send all flight and travel information to OIP.

Step 6
