Information for IROP, Observers, and Visitors

Learn about the university's international programs where medical professionals who are non-U.S. citizens or non-U.S. permanent residents can visit campus.

The Office of International Programs (OIP) at KU Medical Center oversees three different programs that invite non-U.S. citizens or non-U.S. permanent residents to our campus. These health care professionals visit to obtain and share medical expertise.

Each program has a different purpose and maximum length of stay, but all programs are created to so KU Medical Center builds global connections in the worldwide medical community.

International Research Observer Program

Please check the program page for information. Clinicians, Researchers, and Department Personnel should not be contacted with requests.

Program participants:  International Individuals who are neither US citizens nor US permanent residents and all International Medical Graduates regardless of immigration status are eligible to participate in this program through OIP. Participants engage in an educational research experience for his/her own benefit, including professional development.

Purpose of visit: Research

Maximum length of stay: Four (4) months

International Observership Program

Program participants:  Individuals participating in this program through the Office of International Programs are healthcare professionals generally International Medical Graduates regardless of immigration status. Observers can be defined as:

  • Visiting residents
  • Physicians
  • Medical school graduates

Purpose of visit: Strictly observe patient treatment or clinical work while accompanied at all times by sponsoring supervisor or designated attending physician. International observers are not permitted to engage in any patient care or be left alone with patients.

Maximum length of stay: Four (4) weeks

International Visitor Program

Program participants: Non-U.S. citizens or non-U.S. permanent residents who are health care professionals. Visitors can be defined as:

  • Visiting fellows
  • Residents
  • Physicians
  • Scientists
  • Health care administrative staff

Purpose of visit: Conduct meetings, give lectures, and/or participate in lectures at KU Medical Center facilities and departments. International visitors are not permitted to engage in any patient care.

Maximum length of stay: Five (5) days
