H-1B Employment and International Travel

Employees of KU Medical Center who have an H-1B visa need to know this information on international travel and employment status.

An H-1B visa is a type of visa that requires direct employer sponsorship for an international employee.

H-1B EMPLOYMENT

If the University of Kansas Medical Center petitioned for your H-1B visa status, that visa is contingent upon continued employment with the university. This means if your employment ends, your H-1B status will end upon the last date of employment.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL

When traveling internationally, H-1B employees should make sure to have the following items with them:

  1. Passport valid for at least six months into the future
  2. Valid H-1B visa stamp in their passport
  3. I-797 original approval notice
  4. Employment verification letter (from either the department where you work or from the university's Human Resources)

If you will need to apply for a new H-1B visa stamp while abroad, please have items 1-4 listed above and a copy of your H-1B petition.

Upon return from international travel, please be sure to provide the Office of International Programs (OIP) with the latest copy of your I-94 (https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov) and H-1B visa stamp when applicable.

Travel to Canada and Mexico (Automatic Revalidation)

The Automatic Revalidation provision allows internationals on H-1B status to reenter the United States on an expired H-1B visa stamp when traveling to Canada, Mexico or the adjacent islands for 30 days or less.
