Professional Development Experience

As part of our commitment to promote scholarship that supports, challenges, and improves career development at KUMC, we have created the professional development experience program for faculty.

We recognize that faculty are frequently drawn away from their scholarly activities to attend to demands in clinical, teaching, or administrative responsibilities; making it difficult to gain traction in the scholarship of their educational work.

Professional development experience may be granted in strictly meritorious cases to faculty members who have continuously served the university for at least six years. Applicants must agree to serve the university or another Regents' institution for no less than one year following the end of the sabbatical period.

Interested faculty must make prior arrangements with an external sponsor who is willing to commit to collaborating. Experience proposals must define enrichment in career development through brief experiences complementary to those offered at KUMC. Given their short durations, the goals and activities of each professional development experience should be highly focused, clearly stated, and structured.

Applications will be reviewed by the department and the Office of Faculty Affairs and awarded based on the goals for the professional development experience and departmental funding. Professional development experiences must be in the best interest of the institution and may not be any longer than 6 months in duration.
