Appointments and Services
The Writing Center offers multiple appointment types to meet your individual writing needs, at little to no cost as a student, resident or fellow. The aim of all appointment types is to improve not only the writer’s specific assignment, but also their writing and editing skills more broadly. The writing tutor will focus their feedback on the writer’s expressed problem areas, as well as higher order concerns, including clarity, organization, and tone. All consultations are collaborative, as the writer and tutor work together to find solutions.
Fees
Writing Center services are free of charge for KU Medical Center students and residents. Postdoctoral students are required to pay a nominal fee.
Appointment Types
Written Feedback via Email
A writer can share a digital copy of their work, emailing it to writing@kumc.edu. The writing center tutor will reserve time on their schedule to read the writer’s document, write comments about the project, and return the feedback via email. Please send a Microsoft Word document, as this is done through Word’s comment feature.
Synchronous Zoom Meeting
Synchronous Zoom meeting sessions occur when a writer and a tutor meet via Zoom to discuss the writer's work. At the scheduled time, the writing center tutor enters the Zoom room and the writer shares their document. The tutor will review your document at the scheduled appointment time. To access the Zoom link, users must log into the scheduler before their session begins.
Face-to-Face Appointments
These are scheduled in 30- or 60-minute increments and are held in our offices in the Dykes Library G011. The writer should bring either two paper copies of their document or have it easily accessible on their computer.
