WORKSHOPS

Stress and Anxiety Management Skills using Koru Mindfulness – Basic Class  
Tuesdays, 3:30 – 4:15 pm | 6.13 – 7.11 (skip July 4) | Via Zoom or In-person

Who: Students and Residents
Learn how mindfulness can help you reduce stress, sleep better and have less self-judgment. Increasing mindfulness helps people enjoy their lives in the present, reduces rumination about the past and worry about the future. Building a More Positive Relationship with My Body  
Mondays, June 5-26, 5:00-6:00 pm | via Zoom

Who: Students and Residents

In this 4-session workshop we will take a deeper look into your relationship with your body, exploring how you view and treat your body, and building strategies to make the relationship one that is more positive, accepting and aligned. Leaning into these spaces will be done in a supportive, judge free space. It is strongly encouraged to attend all 4 sessions, but you are welcome to attend all that your schedule will allow.  These workshops are limited to 12 students/residents and will meet through Zoom.

BRIDGE- Building Relationship Intimacy and Dialogue Effectiveness
Tuesdays July 11- 25, 12:00-1:00 pm | Via Zoom

Who: Students and Residents

This 3-session workshop focuses on identifying ways to foster healthy relationships via self-monitoring, effective communication, and conflict resolution skills. Sessions include modules dedicated to help you: (1) better understand your values and boundaries in relationships, (2) learn the role of culture in communication, different styles of communication, and strategies for effective communication, and (3) identify common causes of conflict and effective conflict management techniques. Workshop meets by Zoom.

Surviving and Thriving with ADHD and other Executive Function Concerns
Wednesdays, 3:00-3:50 pm June 14 - July 12 (skip July 5) | Via Zoom 

Who: Students and Residents

Identify the ways your brain works and how to thrive with a neurodivergent brain. Skills covered are intended to help you identify where you are now, where you want to be, and develop a plan for how to get there. Rather than trying to do it the way you think others do, identify strategies that work with your needs and plan for your barriers.  Workshop meets by Zoom.

Individual Substance Use Consult

For almost two decades, Dr. Kohlhart has been a counselor supporting and guiding people with substance use concerns using both abstinence and use-reduction models.  Meet with Dr. Kohlhart individually for safe and confidential psychoeducation and/or support to answer your questions about substance use signs and symptoms, the neurobiology of the brain with substances, making changes, and more.

GROUPS

Women of Color Group
Mondays 5:00 – 6:30 pm | June 26-Aug 7 | Via Zoom

Who: Students

This confidential group provides students who identify as women of color the opportunity to connect with and empower one another as we explore various life concerns and impactful themes, including identity, family, interpersonal relationships, race-related stress and trauma, academic distress, and more.   Contact   Dr. Lynette Sparkman-Barnes at lsparkmanbarnes@kumc.edu to schedule pre-group required meeting. 

LGBTQ+ Support Group

Tuesdays 4:00 – 5:00 pm | June 15 - July 27 | Via Zoom

Who: Students

Open to all KUMC students who identify as sexual and/or gender minorities, or those questioning their identities.  This confidential group will explore the ways intersecting identities inform wider life experiences and will seek to increase members' sense of community support.  Experience a safe, affirming, and therapeutic space to connect, gain support, and increase self-awareness.  This support group will meet by Zoom.

Interpersonal Growth Group
Mondays 5:00 – 6:30 pm | June 12 - July 31 (skip July 3) | Via Zoom

Who: Students

Do you struggle to communicate authentically with others? Would you like to feel more comfortable with yourself? Doing so can reduce anxiety, improve mood, as well as enhance your relationships so they are more genuine. Participants will connect with others who seek interpersonal growth, and learn how to provide and receive constructive feedback in a safe and supportive environment.

Monthly Women Physician Discussion Groups

Who: Female Identifying medical residents, fellows, physicians 

Female identifying medical residents, fellows and physicians are invited to join these faculty and trainee discussion groups.  Each month the discussion will focus on the listed topic in addition to following up on previous topics and time for sharing.

Anxiety Toolbox and Support Group
Tuesdays 5:00 – 6:30 pm | June 13-July 18 (skip July 4) | Via Zoom

Who: Students

This group is designed to provide psychoeducation while giving individuals with anxiety a space to gather, share experiences, and empower each other to relate to their anxiety differently and find comfort within the discomfort. Weekly themes may include anxiety’s effects on the body, societal messages regarding anxiety, anxiety management techniques, recognizing and altering unhelpful thinking patterns, and building emotional awareness. Writing Accountability Group
Thursdays 10:00 am – 12:00 pm | June 1 - July 27 | In-person or via Teams

Who: Doctoral Students

The Writing Center will be offering a Writing Accountability Group to help push your dissertation forward, set manageable goals, and build a supportive, interdisciplinary community of writers.  Each meeting will be a time to learn and experiment with new writing strategies during a dedicated time to write alongside a small group of fellow dissertators and writing specialist.  Space is limited, so students defending their dissertations in Spring 2023 will be prioritized. You will need to be able to commit to attending 8 out of our 10 meetings, either in person or via Teams.
