Professional Background

I received my Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. I completed my doctoral internship at UMKC Counseling Services. Prior to joining the KUMC Counseling and Educational Support Services, I worked for many years at UMKC Counseling Services as a staff psychologist, where I developed and served as the Chair of the Eating Disorder Treatment Team. I am a licensed psychologist in Kansas and Missouri, and a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist. My previous experience also includes private practice, inpatient and intensive outpatient settings, and specialized eating disorder treatment. In addition to providing individual, group, and couples therapy, I also enjoy providing presentations and training and conducting workshops.

My areas of special interest include eating issues, body image, anxiety and perfectionism, trauma, self-esteem and identity development. My approach to counseling is collaborative with importance given to creating a positive, safe environment that values the client's voice, experiences and unique aspects of their identity and cultural background. I truly believe the therapeutic relationship is a key element for creating positive growth and change, and I incorporate aspects of Cognitive Behavioral and Acceptance Commitment therapy, Interpersonal Process and Person-Centered theory. Building a connection with mind and body through tools of awareness, mindfulness and self-compassion, as well as collaboration with other resources to support this connection and promote physical well-being are also incorporated into my work with clients as applicable.

In my free time, I enjoy a good cup of coffee and a nice, sunny day spent with family and friends! I am a native of the East Coast but have enjoyed living in the Midwest for many years with my spouse and kids. When I have a chance to get to the ocean, watch the waves, and take in the warm breeze, I am in my happy place!
