Lisa Brune, Ph.D.

Professional Background

Before coming to KU Medical Center, I received my BA in Literature and Theory at William Jewell College and my Ph.D. in English and American Literature at Washington University in St. Louis. While at WashU, I studied how writers build relationships with their readers through certain narrative choices, which transform their stories into pedagogical instruments. I taught College Writing, Intro to Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and as a tutor in The Writing Center, helping students from almost every discipline find pathways to improve their writing assignments and processes.

My love for working in higher education, with passionate and driven students who are building the skills to achieve their goals, has brought me to CESS at KU Medical Center. Here, I assist students with their writing, supporting them as they develop their unique voices as health science experts and academics. Through my own experience, I have learned that writing is not an innate skill, but rather a life-long process of experimentation, growing from failures and building on successes. Writing is also not a solitary task; it works best as a collaborative endeavor – consulting not only specialists, but also peers and colleagues, at every stage of the writing process. My ultimate goals at KU Medical Center’s Writing Services are to help students recognize their ability to grow and feel confident in themselves as writers.

In my time outside of KU Medical Center, I enjoy reading and watching anything sci-fi or fantasy, trying new restaurants and breweries, exploring local parks, and spending time with family.
