Lisa Brune, Ph.D.

Professional Background

Before coming to KU Medical Center in 2022, Lisa received her BA in Literature and Theory at William Jewell College and her Ph.D. in English and American Literature at Washington University in St. Louis. While at WashU, she studied how writers build relationships with their readers through certain narrative choices, which transform their stories into instruments for teaching and world-making. She taught College Writing, Intro to Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and as a tutor at The Writing Center, helping students from almost every discipline find pathways to improve their writing assignments and processes.

Her love for working in higher education, with passionate and driven students, has brought her to CESS at KU Medical Center. Here, she assists students with their writing, supporting them as they develop their unique voices as health science experts and academics. Through her own experience, Lisa has learned that writing is not an innate skill, but rather a life-long process of experimentation, growing from failures and building on successes. Writing also does not need to be a solitary task; it works best as a collaborative endeavor – consulting not only specialists, but also peers and colleagues, at every stage of the process. Lisa’s ultimate goal at KU Medical Center’s Writing Services is to create a safe, judgment-free space to share ideas, so that writers can feel more confident in their ability to communicate and grow.

In her time outside of work, Lisa enjoys reading and watching anything horror, sci-fi or fantasy, trying new restaurants, exploring local parks, and spending time with her family and two cats, Nandor and Nadja.
