Since 2001, Dr. Long has served as Director of the KU Medical Center Counseling & Educational Support Services. As of July 2017, he also serves as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and beginning in July 2022, as director of the University of Kansas Health System's Professional Well-Being Center. It is a pleasure for him to work with such an outstanding team. Individuals and couples regularly seek counseling to enhance their effectiveness in managing stress and time, overcome depression or anxiety, improve relationships or marriages, deal with major changes or loss, heal from traumatic experiences, and build self-confidence. People are constantly changing and growing throughout their lives, and counseling offers an opportunity to "concentrate" the time it takes to develop. It is a process in which he helps individuals draw on existing strengths for self-improvement.
Dr. Long is committed to anti-racism initiatives in his professional life, and he actively works in his personal life to address the systemic racism that exists in our culture. He is also an LGBTQ+-affirmative therapist committed to supporting the community at KU Medical Center, The University of Kansas Health System, and the greater Kansas City area.
Before coming to the University of Kansas Medical Center, Dr. Long worked at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, where he served for five years as a psychologist and Executive Director of Counseling, Health, and Career Services. His Ph.D. is in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri–Kansas City, and he is a licensed psychologist in Kansas and Missouri.
In his free time, Dr. Long enjoys kayaking, cycling, and spending time with his family. His spouse is retired and was a psychologist and associate professor at a local university. His three adult sons are Droo, Nick, and Dan. Their four-legged rescued family members are Bernie and Lucy, both St. Bernards.
