Professional Background
My approach to therapy is collaborative. We are a team working together to help you meet your goals. I use a variety of evidence-based tools to support that work and incorporate many theoretical orientations including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Mindfulness, the ability to pay attention in the moment, with kindness and non-judgment, is an important element in my work with clients. Additionally, our work will include attending to you as an individual and understanding the unique context you bring (culture, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, race/ethnicity, relationship preferences) and how your intersecting identities interact with mine.
I consider myself a “generalist” which means I work with a wide variety of presenting concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, eating/body image concerns, trauma, and grief. I have a particular interest in anxiety as it relates to testing and have worked with many students struggling with distress related to passing exams. While I cannot help you with the content/material you need to learn, I can assist you in developing your “mindset” so that you can do your best while studying and testing.
My entire career has been working with university students because I enjoy this unique phase of life. I have been at KU Medical Center since 2015 and prior to this had 14 years of similar work at UMKC as well as postdoctoral and internship work at Purdue and the University of Illinois.
In my free time, I love spending time with my daughter and our dog as well as with friends and family, both near and far. I am passionate about being active outdoors and participating in group fitness classes, enjoying the benefits that regular exercise provides.
