Girls Night Out

GNO is social and self-care skills program specifically designed for females with autism or other related developmental disabilities. Since 2008, GNO has been offering skills groups specifically for adolescent females with and without autism or other related developmental disabilities. We are scaling up to expand GNO services, which will include a broader age range, increase the number of skills groups and community events, and diversify services to address other unique needs of girls with ASD/DD (e.g. women’s health, dating/healthy relationships, mental health, employment, college planning, transition). Skills group interventions, community events, and certified facilitator trainings will include fees for related activities and services. This also provides a platform for families registering for an event to pay online and to secure payment prior to the event.

Description

Includes the social and self-care skills intervention program, evidence-based curriculum materials and support materials, 2-3 trained facilitators, and costs related to supplies and materials provided during GNO sessions. Includes groups of 8-12 girls with and without ASD who complete the GNO curriculum through 10-12 weekly sessions, approximately 2 hours in length. Sessions take place within community settings and within activities that social and self-care skills naturally occur (e.g., restaurant, coffee shop, hair salon, local boutique, park, etc.). Skills groups focus on social competence, including conversation skills utilized in making and keeping friends, making plans, and navigating social relationships. GNO Skills Groups include girls without developmental disabilities, as trained peer volunteers to participate in all session activities and provide additional social support as well as opportunities for participants to practice skills across a variety of people and settings. Peer volunteers create social opportunities for practice, and model use of skills and supports. Enrollment is limited. Minimum of 5 participants, if fewer than 5, we reserve the right to postpone/reschedule the group. Regular participation is imperative. Participants are encouraged to attend 90% of GNO sessions. Parent and/or guardian involvement is required. Participation in a Skills Group is determined by intake completion, assessment interview appointment, and length of time on our list serve. Duration: 10-12 weeks Planned Days & Frequency of sessions: 1 day a week from approximately 6:00-8:00PM Planned Terms: Fall and Spring (runs with the seasons of the school year)

Designed to build networks and provide opportunities for ongoing social interactions. Community events are less structured compared to skills groups yet include instructional strategies. During each community event participants will have opportunities to practice evidence-based social skills during socialization activities (e.g. games, fitness class, art class, pool party, etc.). Community events are designed for past participants that have completed a GNO skills group OR for participants that have previously attended a GNO community event. Enrollment is limited. Community events occur approximately one evening each month for approximately 2 hours. Parental consent is required. Enrollment is ongoing. Participation in a community event is determined by intake and assessment interview appointment completion.

*GNO Community Events are designed for participants who have completed a GNO assessment interview with our GNO staff or have completed a skills group.

Description

Multiday, onsite GNO certified facilitator trainings will include professionals, graduate students, and related providers that will establish training materials and infrastructure to disseminate and replicate the GNO program model for a regional, national and international impact on girls with ASD. Community trainings and partnerships will result in greater capacity to serve girls and women with ASD and inclusive communities for individuals of all abilities. Trainings will provide increased community-based provider knowledge and awareness of evidence-based practices to support young women with ASD and DD. Once a provider has completed the training, providers will receive an official certification to replicate and disseminate the GNO program model.

*The GNO Certified Provider Training is designed specifically for professionals and educators interested in learning and/or implementing the GNO program intervention into their practice. For information on dates and registration, please contact Mallorey Marek at 913-588-4046 or gno@kumc.edu
