HISTORY: Joy and Robert Daugherty, MD  through the Joy McCann Foundation, made a $500,000 "gift" to the Kansas University Endowment Association in 2002 on behalf of the University of Kansas School of Medicine Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) Program. 

ELIGIBILITY: The Joy McCann Professorship recognizes a woman faculty member, MD or PhD,suppliment any rank or track, in either the School of Medicine, Nursing or Health Professions who demonstrates outstanding leadership and mentoring of students, residents and fellow faculty members. 

AWARD: The award is given for a term of three years and may or may not be renewed for a maximum of six years. As a Joy McCann Professor, the recipient will receive an annual award from the professorship "fund" income of $30,000.  The fund is to be used to encourage, inspire and reward women faculty in their academic careers and support the recipient's "program plan" for three years.  The interview process will be the opportunity for candidates to explain how they would use the funds in support of their program plan.  The School of Medicine, Office of Professional Development and Faculty Affairs (PDFA) in the Executive Dean's office oversees the budget and approval for spending. 

From this award, twenty-five percent (25%) of the award is given as a state salary supplement; provided in addition to normal state salary compensation and is to be used for their personal programming or professional development support. Seventy-five percent (75%) of the award must be applied toward the honoree's "program plan" to develop and fund women's programs or existing annual McCann programs. The overall goals of:the McCann Professor's porgram should be: increasing the visibility of women faculty, integrating women fully at all levels of the faculty and enhancing collaboration among women and various programs at the University of Kansas School of Medicine or within the KUMC community. These programs include various annual projects (events or awards) sponsored by McCann or institutionalized by future recipients as annual events.

RESPONSIBILITY: Named as the Program Consultant of the Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) Organization at KU-SOM, the recipient will be asked to, a) provide an action plan to the WIMS Executive Committe by August 1st each year for projects or programs that will be carried out by the WIMS organization during the three-year Professorship term in support of the vision presented during the interview process, b) serve as a member of the WIMS Executive Council (Money for these activities will come from the Joy McCann Professorship award as defined in the professorship gift to KUMC endowment.), c) provide a yearly yearly progress report to the WIMS President in the fall for inclusion in the WIMS Annual Report.

CRITERIA: The primary criterion for selection by a committee will be evidence of mentoring and leadership in the health profession. Those skills may be focused on any or all of the areas of teaching, research and patient care or science, and/or community service with priority for the recruitment or retention of excellent women faculty members.

The NOMINATION PROCESS includes:

  • Students, residents, or faculty members may submit nominations for the professorship.
  • No self-nominations are permitted; anyone who self nominates will be ineligible for the award.
  • Nominations must be accompanied by the nominee's curriculum vitae, as well as letters of support from the nominator and the nominee's Chair providing evidence or examples of outstanding mentorship, leadership, professionalism and dedication to the careers of women.
  • There are no restrictions on the academic rank of the nominees.

The SELECTION PROCESS, according to the guidelines provided by the Joy McCann Foundation involves:

  • The institution must design a selection process that allows students, residents, and faculty to participate.
  • The selection process should include: review of the nominee's credentials and performance by a committee of peers; an interview of top nominees; and a vote to recommend the top three nominees to the Executive Dean.
  • The review committee for the professorship, as established by the Letter of Gift in 2002, is comprised of:
    • seven (7) members representing the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Health Professions, administration and graduate and undergraduate admissions committees, 
    • the President of President serving as Chair
    • the WIMS President and Executive Dean each appoint three members, and
    • the Associate Director for the Office of Professional Development and faculty Affairs (PDFA) will serve as the staff person for the review committee,
  • The Dean shall make the final determination of the awardee based on the committees ranked recommendations from the selection committee.

NOMINATION TIMELINE

  • Early April - Call for Nominations
  • Early May - Nomination Deadline
  • Mid-May - Selection Committee meets to determnie candidates to interview
  • Late May to Early June - Candidate are interviewed by the selection committee and will present their program plan.
  • Mid June - Candidates are notified and the honoreee is announced.
  • July 1st - the three-year term begins for the new Joy McCann Professor
  • August Annual WIMS Dinner - the honoree is recoginzed following their first appointment.

ANNUAL PROJECTS: Annual Projects Sponsored by the Joy McCann Professorship fund include:

  • The Amy O'Brien-Ladner Innovation Award
  • The Joy McCann Visiting Professor Lecture
  • One or more full scholarships to the AAMC Early or Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminars each year.  Scholarships are awarded to WIMS officers or members of the various WIMS committees in an effort to further develop women leaders in the organization.
