Department Template Explained

Standards At a Glance

  • The new KUMC web template is designed to be deployed on all organizational unit web pages. There are four variations on the template available. Units are encouraged to look at Contribute as an easy way to work with the templates in updating their sites.
  • There could be situations in which the use of a KUMC-branded site may not be appropriate for your use, such as a grant involving community organizations or other universities. For exceptions, contact Internet Develpment, who can assist in creating the site and determining the best options.
  • Use of the KU Seal is prohibited, and use of the Jayhawk mascot and KUMC signature files are clearly defined in the KU Graphic Identity document located on the KU Visual Identity site.
  • A standard Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) is provided along with the template.
  • Beyond the header, footer, and side navigation elements, units are free to add appropriate content (section 5 below).

    1. Department name - reflects organizational structure and identifies your 'parent' unit on your homepage. On subsequent pages, your organizational name takes this location.
    2. Search - default is to search the kumc.edu web site or the phone directory. If your department has a site search, it can be added to the select list.
  2. Navigation - left hand navigation recommended for main level pages in your site for consistent navigation. Dynamic menus are available for sites with complex needs by contacting Internet Development for assistance. A server side include is the best option for inserting navigation elements across your site, especially if it is more than a few pages.
  3. Bread crumb trail - assists in getting user back to top level in a series of pages. Not required but recommended..
  4. Title - generally, this would be your the name of your unit or program. If you have a signature file image created for you by University Relations, you can put it here in lieu of a title. If you change 1a to reflect your unit, this can refer to the title of the page instead of the organizational page.
  5. Main body of page - for photos and content specific to your area.
  6. Footer - required on all pages.
    1. Contact information - customize to your area's relevant information. A server side include is the best option to insert here to ensure consistency across your pages.
