Wyandot Development Corporation Minutes

Board Members Present: Commissioner Tom Cooley, Mayor Clausie Smith, Mayor Eickhoff, and Bob Milan.
Board Members Absent: Mayor Carol Marinovich
Others Present: Ron Cobb (Citizen’s Planning Committee), Kathy Hernandez (arriving at 11:20, City of Edwardsville), George Powell (Board of Public Utilities), Wayne Franklin (Southwestern Bell), and Betty Thompson (City of Bonner Springs).
Citizens’ Planning Committee Update:
Ron Cobb reported that CPC met with the Community Conversations group on school funding. Thirty-one citizens will meet on December 15th with Study Circles, will then form an ad-hoc group to work on initiatives for Unified School District 500 (possibly adding Turner and Piper School Districts later) and will report back.
Approval of Minutes:
The minutes of the August 20, 2003 meeting were approved on a motion by Commissioner Cooley and a second by Mr. Milan.
Introduction of New Administrative Assistant:
Mayor Clausie Smith introduced Betty Thompson (913-667-1713; bettyt@bonnersprings.org), the new Administrative Assistant to the City Manager in Bonner Springs, who will be taking minutes in lieu of Marcia Ashford, who is now Bonner Springs’ Community and Economic Development Director.
Treasurer’s Report:
Tom Cooley presented the Treasurer’s Report for the period August 14 through November 17, 2003, providing an overview and explanation of the cash report, corporate funds, New Century Partnership, and check register. At the next meeting, Mr. Cooley will bring signature cards for Mayors Smith and Eickhoff. The Treasurer’s Report was approved on a motion by Mr. Milan and a second by Mayor Eickhoff.
Host Report:
Board of Public Utilities George Powell, Director of Economic Development and Retail Services, reported the following:
- Over 500 residential homes, including 450 homes in our service area (KCK), were added in the county through November, representing a $1.5 million utility investment in infrastructure for development. The county currently has over 50 active subdivisions with almost 3,000 lots in development or planning stages.
- Nissan’s radio ad refers to Wyandotte County as “trendy.”
- The Village West development is going well.
- Two hundred tornado customers who lost their homes are replacing or rebuilding.
- Numerous industrial expansions throughout the county were mentioned including the addition of a third shift in April 2004 to the General Motors plant, expansion of Certain-Teed, and the splitting of KUMED into two entities (the university focusing on bioscience and education and the hospital focusing on health care and building a heart center).
Information Items
Board members discussed a variety of upcoming holiday events.
Next meeting date – Wednesday, January 21, 2004, hosted by the City of Edwardsville.
With a motion by Commissioner Cooley and a second by Mayor Smith, a motion to adjourn the meeting at 11:40 a.m. was approved.
