CITIZENS PLANNING COMMITTEE UPDATE

Outcome of Best of Wyandotte Celebration – Craig Gaffney and Susan Rohrer were present to report on the outcome of the 5th Best of Wyandotte Celebration held on April 26. A brochure from the event was distributed. Mr. Gaffney reported that 400-500 people enjoyed a great evening for the community, and many positive comments were received.

Ms. Rohrer said there were thirty-two applicants for the Best of Wyandotte Award. A screening committee narrowed the pool of applicants to 10 finalists, and the finalists made presentations to a jury during the day of April 26. After the competition, the jury selected three winners, which are as follows:

Catholic Housing of Wyandotte County (single-family housing program)

Chelsea Plaza Homes

Wyandotte County Heritage Mural Project

Each of the three winners received $500.00 from the Breidenthal Foundation.

The Citizenship Award was presented to Pastor Randy Beeman from the First Christian Church in Edwardsville.

A couple of suggestions were made for the next celebration in two years. One is to eliminate the head table, and the other is to give the remaining seven finalists at least a $100 reward. The Best of Wyandotte Committee may also look at increasing the amount awarded to the top three winners.

Mayor Stolfus mentioned that he sent a Best of Wyandotte brochure to Chris Gates, president of the National Civic League, to inform him of our event, which is modeled after the All-America City Award.

Mr. Gaffney stated that the next big event for the Citizens Planning Committee is the 5-year visioning process that is scheduled for October 23, 2000, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. Dr. Graham Toft has been invited to attend, and will visit sometime this summer to hold focus group meetings before the October 23 event.

TREASURER’S REPORT

Tom Cooley provided a treasurer’s report for the Wyandot Development Corporation. A cash report for the corporation, a check register, the three funds that are included in the corporation account and a cash report for the North America International Trade Corridor Partnership were provided for the board’s review and consideration. The account’s balance was $45,017.67 as of May 15, 2000. He stated that the July report should reflect all of the revenue and expenses for the Best of Wyandotte Celebration.

Ms. Ryan inquired as to how the Wyandotte County Economic Development Council is funded, and Commissioner Cooley explained. Wyandotte Development, Inc. (WDI) is the marketing branch of the Wyandotte County Economic Development Council and should not be confused with the Wyandot Development Corporation, the 501C3 corporation. He explained that funding for the Citizen’s Planning Committee comes from the county side of the Unified Government through an economic development mill levy.

Because of the amount of money that will be generated by The New Century Partnership fundraising campaign being undertaken by WDI, Mr. Cooley stated that a new account may be set up to make the accounting process easier. It would still be part of the Wyandot Development Corporation funds, but have a separate account.

Mr. Cooley reported that the corporate papers have been filed with the state.

Mayor Berry made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report as submitted. Commissioner Cooley seconded the motion, and it was unanimously approved.

Mr. Gaffney briefly reported on the status of The New Century Partnership fundraising campaign.

A. Director and Officer Liability Insurance for the Board of Directors – Commissioner Cooley said that he will provide a report at the July meeting.

B. Corporate Legal Attorney – Commissioner Cooley stated that he will provide a report at the July meeting.
