REPORT FROM CITIZEN'S PLANNING COMMITTEE
A. Outcome of 1997 All-America City Celebration - Ms. Rohrer and Mayor Stolfus report that it was a successful event, and that they had received many favorable comments. Approximately 1,500 people from 30 communities attended the celebration. Ms. Rohrer provided an overview of the bi-state bus tours and said that this was a great opportunity to work with employees and volunteers from the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jackson County. Mayor Stolfus reported that the host committee will hold two more meetings to evaluate the outcome of the event and to make sure all bills have been paid. Mobile, Alabama will be the host city for the 1998 celebration.
A post celebration get-together for all volunteers is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, July 8, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. it was mentioned that the groundbreaking for the new EPA building is at 2:00 that same day as well as the election.
B. Retail Committee Report - Pat Brune and Tom Cooley provided an update concerning the Retail Committee's retail survey. The survey and inventory are complete and in draft form. Employees of the City of Kansas City, Kansas and the intern hired to help with this endeavor did an excellent job in compiling the information. The Retail Committee is now trying to determine what the next step or level is for the survey. It should become a public document for county-wide marketing and offered to as many small and large businesses and other agencies as possible. One question is who will maintain this document into the year 2000. It should not be difficult to maintain, but it must not become obsolete. Funding is another issue. The committee may not proceed until the new government is formed.
The CPC is meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Grinter House with all core issue groups to provide an overview of the Strategic Plan and how each group fits into the overall plan. The retail survey will be available for that meeting.
On behalf of the CPC, Ms. Brune reported that the Citizenship Committee is working to establish an All Faith Citizenship Sunday on September 14. Their goal is that all 388 churches in Wyandotte County will recite the Wyandotte County Citizenship Pledge on that day. A suggestion was made to draft a proclamation for this event signed by the three mayors of Kansas City, Kansas, Edwardsville and Bonner Springs.
She also reported that the Youth and Schools Core Issue Group will be sending out the Partnership Agreement Certificates to the schools. The results of the Partnership Agreements between the schools, parents, and students have been astounding. Argentine has led the way in having the most participants yet.
Mr. Cooley mentioned that the CPC has started planning the next year's event, the Best of Wyandotte Celebration, which is modeled after the All-America City Award. he also stated that the Wyandotte County Commission had approved the 1997 budget for the CPC.
