Syllabus

To: All Incoming Medical Students and Residents to the Vascular Surgery Service

Welcome to the Vascular Surgery Service. It is our plan to introduce you to the basics of Vascular Surgery during this rotation. You are expected to:

  1. Complete a History and Physical on all admissions.
  2. Scrub on assigned cases.
  3. Write daily progress notes.
  4. Remain in the hospital when patients are critically ill.
  5. Spend time in Non-Invasive Vascular laboratory.
  6. Attend Vascular Conference and Vascular Journal Club.
    • Vascular Conference - every Thursday @ 7:00 a.m. - 5th floor Main Hospital conference room
    • Vascular Journal Club - 1st Thursday of each month - Wyandotte Room - Main Cafeteria

The Nurse Clinician/Vascular Lab Technician, Sharon Apel (x3139) will prove to be a valuable resource during this rotation. Please note that each Attending may require that his/her patients be managed in a manner different from that of other Attendings. It is best to inquire about the management during or immediately following operations.

Finally, we recommend that you consider the following sources for reading during this rotation:

  1. Vascular Surgery for the House Officer, John R. Cohen
  2. Current Therapy in Vascular Surgery, Ernst and Stanley, eds., 1991
  3. Vascular Surgery, Rutherford, ed.

We hope you enjoy the Vascular Surgery Service and that it will provide you with an excellent learning experience.

James H. Thomas, M.D., RVT.
