Using information technology, the University of Kansas Medical Center is changing where, when, and how students learn. The "Virtual Classroom" is an Internet web-site on the KU Medical Center computer network that houses courses, supplemental material and study aids for the Schools of Allied Health, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Graduate Studies as well as Continuing Education.
Before getting started, we suggest a review of the Desktop Computer Standards at KU Medical Center.
School of Allied Health: With its integration of web-based courses, the KU School of Allied Health remains a national leader in higher education. Faculty utilize the Internet to both aide in traditional classroom instruction and to deliver entire courses to students in distant locations. Students can complete on-line courses in a wide array of Allied Health disciplines, ranging from Respiratory Care to Nurse Anesthesia to Health Information Management and many others. These highly interactive classes involve the latest technologies and multimedia and compliment regular on-campus lab work. Visit the School's home page at www.alliedhealth.kumc.edu
School of Medicine: Many courses in the School of Medicine curriculum have materials posted in the Virtual Classroom. In each case, materials may include course syllabi, old exams, images and presentation slides from lectures and some interactive learning modules. Students should become familiar with the Virtual Classroom and utilize these materials as a supplement to lectures and small group sessions. Use of the World Wide Web and the Virtual Classroom is an important computer skill which students will be expected to develop. Orientation and instruction in the use of these systems is provided to entering students before classes begin. Visit the KU School of Medicine's home page at http://www.kumc.edu/som/som.html
School of Nursing: A nationally recognized leader in web-based education, the KU School of Nursing has increased access to education for nurses by providing accelerated degree programs and selected courses through the Virtual Classroom. Degree programs available through the Virtual Classroom include a master of science in nursing for BSN, certificate-prepared nurse practitioners (Family, Adult, Geriatric) and the RN to BSN degree completion program.
