How to Apply
The KU General Diagnostic Ultrasound & Vascular Technology Program is a 40-hour per week, hospital-based certificate program covering studies in the areas of sonography principles and instrumentation, abdomen, and OB/GYN. The program length is 18 months (5 academic semesters). The program cost is $1000 per semester, subject to change.

The prerequisites to apply are as follows (sorry, no exceptions are made):
- Applicant must have completed, or be currently enrolled in, at the minimum a 24-month Radiologic Technology Program (60 semester credit hours or 84 quarter credit hours).
Please note: The required RT program is not available at the University of Kansas – please use the links at right for schools offering accredited AART programs. - Applicants must be a Registered Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) or must be registry-certified before program start date in September.
- Post-secondary credits, with a cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, are required in the following courses:
• Communication skills (English, speech, or composition)
• General college-level physics and/or radiographic physics
• Human anatomy and physiology
• Algebra, statistics (or higher) mathematics course - The student will be required to pass the ARRT registry exam before entrance into the ultrasound program.
Before you start the online application
It will be helpful if you have the following information ready before starting the online application:
- Personal Statement: Please explain in your own words (typed, 500 words or less) why you are interested in the KU Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology program and the field of sonography in general.
- Proof of ARRT certification: Students currently in school may substitute proof of certification with a signed letter from a current program director stating the applicant is in good standing. Please note: KU does not offer a Registered Radiologic Technology program; visit our website for a list of schools which may provide the ARRT registry certification.
- References: Have available the names and contact information (including email addresses) of three (3) individuals. References should be from your program director/manager, didactic and/or clinical instructors, radiologists and/or co-workers from your radiology program or current or former employer in radiology. Make sure they are willing to submit the reference electronically, and inform them that they will be receiving an email from “KU Medical Center<help@applyweb.com>” requesting them to submit a reference for you online.
- Review the Technical Standards and Requirements
- English Language Proficiency: All applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency through either the TOEFL or IELTS testing systems. The test must have been taken within two (2) years of the first semester of enrollment. Results must be provided directly to KUMC by the testing service using ETS school code 6895. Photocopies of scores will not be accepted.
- Transcripts: Arrange to have one official copy of each transcript from every college and university that you have attended sent directly to KU Medical Center at the following address:

An applicant is considered an international student if he or she requires a visa, or currently resides in the U.S. with non-immigrant status, or currently resides in the U.S. while applying for permanent residency. Additional requirements and documentation, such as proof of English language proficiency, are required for international students to become eligible for KU programs. Please review the information for international students before applying.
International Transcripts: In addition to sending an official copy of each transcript, as above, have your transcripts evaluated by World Education Services OR Educational Credential Evaluators. The evaluation must include course-by-course evaluation, grade evaluation, and indicate the degree earned in U.S. terms (bachelors, masters, doctorate, etc). An official copy of the evaluation is required.

Alternatively, you may send a check made payable to KUMC for $25 (U.S.) for evaluation by the KU Graduate Application Processing Center. If this option is selected, the official transcripts must arrive at least 2 weeks prior to the admission deadline.
Additional Information for Applicants
Selection of applicants will be based on consideration of a number of factors, including overall GPA, Rad Tech Program GPA, personal statement and recommendation letters. All applicants will be notified via e-mail of their status after the interview process is completed.
The Selection Process
- Only completed application packets will be reviewed by the interview committee. Submitted material will be rated or scored depending on content.
- A personal interview with the applicant will be scheduled, generally in the month of March.
- After completion of the interview, the applicant will be given an opportunity to tour department and speak to an enrolled student in the program. The applicant may be called in for a second interview.
Personal Interviews
- Personal interviews will be conducted by each interview committee member. The person(s) conducting the interview will ask a series of questions. Committee members will rate the applicants on a number assigned to the endorsement category (i.e. (5) Accept, (1) Do not accept).
- After the completion of all applicant interviews, the Admissions Committee will review all scores and ratings from interviews and submitted materials and determine accepted and alternate student(s).
- After the Admissions Committee has come to a conclusion, the applicants will receive an e-mail with an attached "Letter of Acceptance, Alternate or Non-Acceptance." If the applicant receives a "Letter of Acceptance" he/she will need to send a "Letter of Intent" within the time period specified in the acceptance letter.
Technical Standards and Accommodations
Please read and review the Technical Standards and Requirements carefully after you submit your application materials. Signed verification will be required of our students after they have been accepted.
The Admissions Committee reserves the right to remove an application from consideration if patterns of past or current academic performance indicate that the applicant is at risk of not succeeding in the intense and demanding Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology Program. These patterns include but are not limited to, average recommendations, multiple withdrawals, failures or repeats of coursework as noted on official transcripts.

CPR/First Aid
All accepted students must submit copies of current, valid CPR and First Aid certification prior to the program start date. CPR certification must cover the entire lifespan (infant, child, and adult). Accepted students are responsible for maintaining current, valid CPR status throughout the duration of the DUT certificate program.
In addition, students must provide proof of current health insurance coverage and pass a criminal background check before entering the program.

Applicants must submit their initial application and pay the non-refundable application fee online by the posted deadline.

Applicants can pay by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express or by Electronic Check. U.S. banks only. Application fees are non-refundable. Electronic checks will be held for approximately six business days while the check clears.
Applications are not reviewed until all of the requested information is received.
