Suggestion: I have a suggestion that could save gas consumption and cut down on daily traffic during the rush-hour. Consider allowing 4-day work weeks for all employees, where feasible. Four 10-hour days could be accomplished with minimal disruption as long as employees covered the whole 5-day work week. There would be fewer cars on the roads, less gas being consumed, plus employees would be saving in many different ways (lunches, laundry or dry cleaning, wear & tear on cars, gasoline) by not reporting to work 5 days a week. I am not sure how this could be started at such a huge institution but I think it would be worth a trial.

Response: Thank you for using the KUMC Pulse Suggestion Box. KUMC has always had the flexibility to use compressed work weeks. However, in many departments, it is not possible to use this type of scheduling due to student/patient/research demands. Individual departments or schools wishing to consider compressed work schedules that allow employees to work 4 ten hour days, should work with Human Resources to insure adequate departmental coverage and compliance with Federal/State labor laws or union agreements. Studies show that persons working 10 hour work days frequently find that they do not always fit nicely into family schedules and become very long after a period of time. We must also be careful to insure that productivity is not be compromised by using the longer work day. Department Heads wanting to consider a compressed workweek, should work with their managers to insure that supervision and communication is maintained. This can become a particularly troublesome issue for managers having employees who work significant parts of their work day when managers are not present. Compressed workweeks may benefit individual employees to offset gas prices. However, widespread use of such scheduling may result in increased campuswide utility costs as a result of needing to provide heating/cooling and lighting for longer periods each business day. Suggestion: I think it is absolutly wrong to charge employees to park at their place or employment. I have NEVER heard of this before. My patients have to come to the center 3 times a week for a specific treatment and they too must pay for parking. That cost the patient approx. $145 a year! Everyone, patients and employees alike HATE the parking here.

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. It is not out of the norm for private firms and government offices to charge employees for parking. The State of Kansas has mandated that all parking at Board of Regents institutions must be self-supporting. We receive no funding from the state to finance our parking system, so we must generate the necessary revenue through our parking fees. Our parking fees are very reasonable when compared to other parking rates in the Kansas City metro area. We are in the midst of a very robust program designed to improve the parking situation on and around campus. Last October, we completed the expansion of Red lot 90, at the corner of 36th St and Eaton. This lot increased the number of red spots in lot 90 to a total of 260. This expansion cost KUMC $2 million. We have just broken ground for construction of the new $11M 956-car "Bluff¿ Garage. This structure is scheduled to be opened in September/October 2006. The Bluff Garage will be positioned just below the bluff on which the Biomedical Research Center is being built. The Bluff Garage will be a five-level structure, accessible from both the east and the west, and will provide staff parking and protected access to campus via an extension of the pedestrian walkway which crosses 39th Street at Dykes Library. Future plans call for the construction of additional patient parking on the south side of campus,. No one likes to pay for parking, but someone has to or it won't exist. We make every effort to control the cost of this essential service and provide the best parking possible within the resources available.
