Suggestions and Responses for KU Medical Center

Suggestions and responses for 2002

Suggestion: make the type LEGIBLE??? the links are all blurry - are they images?

Response: Your web browser is set to display text in a smaller size. Many web sites do not allow users to control the size of the text, so it may appear that the KUMC site has abnormally large or small text. You can change the size in your browser by going to View, then Text Size. (2002-11-13 16:10:00.0)

Suggestion: Where is the link for the campus events calendar on the new web site? If this is a resource that KUMC is still encouraged to use can there be a link to it from the KUMC home page?

Response: Thanks for your note. We've actually made the calendar of events more prominent in the new design. If you go to any of the major sections - General Info, Academics, Research, or Faculty/Staff - you'll see the next three calendar events displayed, plus a link to the full calendar. (2002-11-04 10:56:00.0)

Suggestion: I am wondering if "In the Center" is not published on line any more. The last publication was in April.

Response: We are working to resolve the problem which is related to formatting issues. We should get it on the KUMC Web site shortly. (2002-11-01 16:05:00.0)

Suggestion: I thought the new look to the www.kumc.edu page was temporary but since it's been up for a while... I am unable to read the writing down the left side of the page b/c it's so small. Can it be enlarged?

Response: Thanks for your note. Our new design allows you to control the size of the text, in accordance with Kansas state accessibility guidelines. You likely have your text set too small, but because not many sites allow to change the size, you don't know it. If you're in Internet Explorer, go to View, then Text Size. Most prefer Medium. In Netscape, go to View, then Change Text Size. (2002-10-29 18:26:00.0)

Suggestion: Please forward to KU Medical Center's VP for Development (fundraising). Thank you.Dear Sir or Madam,I'd like to help you and the University of Kansas Medical Center raise funds by writing proposals on a per-project basis. Even if you have grantwriters on staff, I can help, particularly:* if existing staff is swamped;* if you are short on staff;* if you have a short deadline and limited resources; or* if you simply wish to benefit from an experienced, outside perspective.I'm a freelance grantwriter with 21 years experience in the field: 11 serving on staff at nonprofits, and ten (so far) running my own one-person business, with clients nationwide. I've helped the University of Pennsylvania, Stevens Institute of Technology, the University of Louisville, and many other institutions raise funds. All of my clients use me on a flexible basis, ranging from a single proposal to ongoing work. Typically, I'm able to work from my office via e-mail and telephone, thereby avoiding travel while saving you money and time. However, I'm certainly available for any meeting required at your site.I'm experienced, creative, effective, and affordable. To learn more, please visit my web site: http://www.libertynet.org/grants Then e-mail me (narberth@aol.com) or give me a call (610) 667-5071, in the Philadelphia area. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, William M. Dingfelder, Ph.D. PS - If you don't use my services at this time, please keep my contact information on file: perhaps I can help you in the future. Also, please feel free to share my information with your associates at other nonprofits. Thank you.

Response: Your message was sent to our VP for Development.Thank you for using the KUMC Pulse Suggestion Box. (2002-10-28 14:06:00.0)

Suggestion: I have appreciated having the opportunity to use your medlink calulator's in my practice in outpatient care prior to the tools being blocked. Is it possible for staff outside of KUMC to continue to have assess? If not, thank you for past availability.

Response: Thanks for your note. Due to copyright restrictions, certain areas of our web site are restricted to internal use only. You may contact the individual owner of the site for express permission. (2002-10-10 09:09:00.0)

Suggestion: The alphabet on the front page of the old site was a very valuable navigation tool. Is it possible to put it back on the front page of the new site?

Response: Thanks for your note. The redesign committee decided the homepage needed less information than in previous designs, so the alphabetic listings were removed from the homepage. You can still access those listings by going to one of the individual sections, such as faculty/staff. Jameson Watkins (2002-10-10 09:08:00.0)

Suggestion: KU needs to build more parking facilities for its employees. KU staff overwhelming street parking is already a problem in the Volker area east of State Line Rd, and we have heard rumors that in recent months you have actually cut the number of parking spaces, further encouraging your staff to park in the neighborhood. You need to provide this parking on your own property, not send people out into an area that already has parking shortage.

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. Actually, we have increased the number of parking spaces. Two new parking lots are scheduled to be opened in a matter of just a few days. Currently, KUMC has a sufficient number of parking spaces to accommodate its staff and students. With the future in mind, the University recently hired a parking consultant to examine the parking situation. As the campus grows, new parking will be identified. Additional options, including new parking garages are being planned. Some employees chose to park on the streets due to the closer proximity to their work location. Hopefully, the on street parking is being done legally and with respect for the local residents. (2002-10-09 10:19:00.0)

Suggestion: Like the new look. Great job, the only suggestion I have is about the column on the left side the text should be bigger.

Response: Thanks for your note. You may change the size of the font from within your web browser's settings. Most versions have a View menu option that has a Text Size setting. (2002-09-25 09:56:00.0)

Suggestion: kudos on the new site. It looks great

Response: Thanks for your note. (2002-09-25 09:55:00.0)

Suggestion: I cannot find anything on your web site when I search for "2002 Flu Clinic"?? Is the clinic being offered again this year.I seem to struggle to find the date of the event on your site every year. How about putting an icon right on the home page?

Response: The date this year is October 26th. Thanks for the idea about the icon on the website. I will pass it on to the web designer. (2002-09-24 07:14:00.0)

Suggestion: I would like to see all the committees and by-laws available on the web. Specifically I would like to see the list of members of committee in the faculty assembly. The School of Allied Health is a good example of how this can be done.

Response: Peri, this is a great suggestion. As chair of the faculty assembly, you can make this happen. Karen Chinn and Jameson Watkins will be great resources in designing the page and will give you suggestions/guidelines on maintaining the page.Let me know if we help further.Sandra Colyer (2002-09-23 13:17:00.0)

Suggestion: I was a student enrolled in a life science degree course in Ghana. I could not complete my school before coming to the states with a visitor visa. How ever the visa is expired but I now have the desire to complete my education in the medical field. Please is there any hope ? since I am now wishing to be a doctor.

Response: Thank you for using the KUMC Pulse Suggestion Box.In order to be considered at KU, you must be a US citizen or have permanent residence status. If your visa status changes, please let us know.Thank you. (2002-09-04 16:49:00.0)

Suggestion: Is there anyway to contact a current patient to see how they are doing? I am the administrative assistant of the company that a patient was working before he was injured. We would like to know his progress. Thank you for any assistance you can give on this matter.

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. You may call our Patient Information number at 913/588-5800 and ask for the patient's room and speak to the patient directly.Thank you. (2002-09-04 08:10:00.0)

Suggestion: I am involved with a much smaller non-profit organization that has begun a "capital campaign" for parking spaces. The program is that employees donate so much money out of their paychecks for their choice of pay periods. This money will be used for parking improvements. I thought that this would be a great thing here at KU with many more employees, maybe the State would match our donations-moving us closer to getting a parking garage at 39th and Rainbow for employees.

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. Below, please find a reply from the Director of Parking Services. The state does not provide any funding for parking at Regents Universities. By state law, parking must be a self supporting operation. Thus, I cannot see the state "matching" any funding. The campus master plan does not call for a parking structure at 39th & State Line. The new garage that is being planned (36th & Rainbow area) is estimated to cost $12 million. Also, KUMC does not own the land at 39th & State Line.Thank you. (2002-08-26 15:28:00.0)

Suggestion: I am interested in finding a new physician in Wichita, KS, and would prefer a KU Med School grad (I'm a '97 KU-Lawrence grad). I love the Physician Referral Directory on the Pulse web site (unfortunately, all of the listings are for the KC area) and hoped the Wichita branch of the KU Med Center would have something similar. I inquired about a Physician Referral Directory via the Wichita site and recieved a response from Dr. Douglas Woolley, Delos Smith Professor of Community Geriatrics, who said that such a list was not available via their web site. Would you be able to expand the Physician Directory on your site to include areas outside of Kansas City? That would be very helpful. Thank you.

Response: Thanks for your note. The Physician Referral Directory is a resource created and maintained by the KU Med Hospital (www.kumed.com), which is affliated with the University of Kansas Medical Center (www.kumc.edu) but not a part of. I'm forwarding your request to the appropriate contact with the hospital. (2002-08-21 12:53:00.0)

Suggestion: I was wondering if KU Med in KC had a radiology school and if so, how and when do I apply and what are the prerequisites?

Response: KU Med does not have a Radiology Technology program. KU Med is a clinical affiliate site for Fort Hays State University's program. There are several radiology programs in the Metropolitan KC area including Avila College, Penn Valley Community College, Sanford Brown College, St. Luke's Hospital, and Research Medical Center. KU Med does however have a radiology residency program. Information regarding the Radiology Residency Program can be found under the Residency program link on the KUMC webpage at www.kumc.edu Thank you for using the KUMC Pulse Suggestion Box. Suggestion: How can other health professionals from other states access information re specific disease conditions. I am an Alabama RN and am trying to find information re a congential anomaly...Cor Triatriatum. This is a very rare anomaly and information is scarce. Thanks. beca4177@aol.com

Response: One of our cardiologists here at KUMC, Dr. Kevin Mulhern, says there is a lot of information in adult and pediatric cardiology journals as well as textbooks about this fairly uncommon condition, cor triatriatum. He cites an excellent resource, available in almost any medical library: Moss and Adams Heart Disease in Infants, Children, and Adolescents now in its 6th edition. He also suggests to browse the website for professionals at http://www.tchin.org/ilinks/profess/c_profess.htm Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. (2002-02-06 13:34:00.0)

Suggestion: I was surprised to note that the News is featuring a six month old article on the front page when the archives shows weekly interesting stories. My first thought was that your most recent article was the six month old one and I would not have gone further, had I not been searching for a specific article. I think you should update your home page story more frequently and provide quick access to your news writers just in case someone has a story to share with KUMC, or is from the press. Thank you for your interest in my opinions.

Response: Thanks for your note. There are articles posted to different sections of the site based on the intended audience. The archive section contains all articles, so it's possible to see differently dated material there than the homepage. (2002-01-22 16:34:00.0)
