Response: Hi, This is Dr. Thomas at the KU Medical Center. Thank you for the email concerning the remains of Mr. James S. Keller. Suggestion: Hi, my name is Rozlynn Bundy. I am doing a research assignment for a marketing class and I chose to critique your website. Don't take it personally :)...The only thing I noticed strange or misleading was the fact that The University of Kansas and KU Medical Center have two seperate home pages, but yet neither of these home pages appears when I first opened up the site. I discovered the University's home page through, I think clicking on virtual classroom tours. Please respond as to why there is a seperate home page for the University buried a few clicks deep in the main home page.Other than that, I think your web site is amazing! There are more than enough links to get me to where I need to go. Also, I really like the fact that there are medical procedures/information links related to the KU Medical Center. Our marketing instructor suggests that any website should be able to take you where you need to go in 7 clicks or less. I think you've accomplished that! Good Job!Sincerely,Rozlynn BundyPittsburgh, PA

Response: The KU-Lawrence campus and KU Medical Center share the same chancellor, but we have separate locations and facilities, web servers, etc. It's no doubt confusing to the average visitor, as you point out. In the center column of our site (www.kumc.edu) we have a link to the main campus. On their site, (www.ku.edu) they have a list of other campuses in the bottom righthand corner. Thanks for your kind note. (2001-10-25 10:32:00.0)

Suggestion: I'm going to be a sophmore in high school. I'm thinking about being a doctor, but trying to figure out what the best major is. I live in Arizona now, but might move to Nebraska. Would a major in microbiology get me into med school?

Response: Thank you for using the KUMC Pulse Suggestion Box. Applicants to medical school have a wide variety of majors. KU does not "weight" one major over another, but rather hopes to have a diverse group of students/majors. We advise undergraduates to seek a major in an area that they would be happy working in, in case they do not get into medical school or change their minds about applying. You are more apt to do well in a major that interests you rather than one you hope will "get you into medical school." Medical school application is very competitive, you will need a good science background as well as a broad understanding of health care and medicine. You may wish to visit our web site at www.kumc.edu/som/som.html Thank you for your interest. (2001-08-16 15:30:00.0)

Suggestion: PS: A smallnote given below enlightens you about a new concept for control of migaine headaches. If you need any further information, I will be pleased to furnish.A NEW APPROACH FOR TREATMENT OF MIGRAINE HEADACHESThe world over, a few hundred million people suffer from migraine headaches that vary differently. Migraines are a complex in nature what causes the disorders are unknown. Hence its prevention is difficult. However, the various treatments are available which are helpful to reduce the number of attacks for migraine sufferers.Migraines can be experienced as low as once a year or as often as daily. The intensity of pain varies from person to person starting from low to very severe shooting type remained for some hours and then decreases to low. The attack of migraine lasts from few hours to 3-4 days. Hence the treatments vary.As said, the causes for the disorders are not known. Researches have been continued and various options have been suggested to reduce its intensity and frequency but the effective treatment is not yet found. A natural therapy known as Gemstones therapy appears to be effective for control of various typical diseases and so prevention of migraine headaches. This therapy is not new and the leaders in each society were aware of powerful properties of gemstones from the ancient time. Their cost and low availability resulted in knowledge to be remained in the hands of few people. The growing modern concepts reveal the gemstone therapy is no more secretive science of nature. Scientifically the gemstones function by concentrating a beam of electron of different color wave- length. In other terms, this may be called as color therapy. Seven colors composed in white light are corresponding to seven planets existing in our universe emitting different color rays, which influence the human body greatly in behavior and reaction aspects. The reasons for the influence of rays are due to existence of corresponding planetary system inside the body itself in form of centers. These centers are interrelated to each other via a central center known as a Saturn planet. When these centers are interred balanced, a human being can have good health.Any deficiencies or excess of color rays on the centers would give rise to various kinds of diseases depending on the type center efficiency. It is thus possible to rebalance the centers for getting rid of related diseases. This can be done by the application of gemstones capable of emitting the required color rays on the needed centers. These centers are connected to fingers and other parts of body at the specific locations through which color rays are transmitted to centers. It has to be noted here that the requirements for the centers are color rays, which can be provided by use low cost stones that are also equally effective. It is now necessary to understand the theory of colors in relation of corresponding planets that would provide the possible causes of disorders. Accordingly, the specific stones can be selected. The selected stones are to be worn on the specific locations for rebalancing the mal functioning centers. As the centers go on balancing, the simultaneously the corresponding disease will reduce. With this in view, the author has tried to analyze the causes of migraine headaches based on the above concept, it appears the chief causes are associated with the Saturn and the Sun planets emitting blue and red rays respectively. The experiments in this direction have shown very good results in getting rid of migraine headaches but at different rate. The study has opened the new approaches for migraine sufferers.V.K.JAINB.Sc, B.Sc.Engg.(Mech.)Dehradun-248001INDIA

Suggestion: hello, just been checking your ethnic & religious dates calendar and would like you to make the necessary changes to the Sikh events.Vaisakhi is only ever on 13 April every year and is ONLY celebrated by the Sikhs 'Vaisakihi' means the 'Birth of the Khalsa'. Lohri is not celebrated by the Sikhs with the same reference to Hindus (colour & water). The reasons why Sikhs attend their holy temple on this event is because on that same day one of the Sikh Guru's was released from prison. Guru Gobind Singh's birthday is on 2nd January and not 14 January. Sikhs also celebrate 'Hola Mohalla' which is on 10 March. Another important event for the Sikhs is when the holy book was initiatied as the Guru of the Sikhs 'Guru Granth Sahib' on 19 August. 14 November which is the same day as Diwali but the Sikhs celebrate 'Bandhi Chhor Diwas. The Founder of Sikhism was 'Guru Nanak Sahib who's birthday is on 30 November. I hope to see these changes made to the diversity calendar.Thank You

Response: Thank you for using the KUMC Pulse Suggestion Box. I will make sure that our diversity coordinator receives your message.Debra BrogdenOffice of the Executive Vice Chancellor (2001-06-20 15:16:00.0)

Suggestion: I am trying to get information on KUMC's research IRB and human subjects committee. I have been looking on our website for 10-15 minutes and have been unable to find such information. I could find no relevant links under "research," which I think is the logical place to find it. I could also find no relevant office or committee under "committee." Using the search function, entering "IRB," "ethics" and "human subjects" also yielded no results. I know that this information is available on the web because in the distant past I consulted it. This information is important to researchers, and should not be so well-hidden! I have given up and will use the phone instead.

Suggestion: As a cancer patient I have some questions that you might be able to answer for me. I would like to get a second opinon on facts. I was first biopsied in December with a secondary tumor which was a squamous cell carcinoma. This tumor was on the right side of my neck and surrounded a lymph node. I required a second operation which removed all my lymph nodes from my right side. Four lymph nodes came back with cancer. Three was determined to be a stage II cancer and one a stage III. I've udergone 7 weeks of radiation therapy in my neck, spinal area, pharanx, espophegus. During my working life as a detective with the NYCPD I've been called to my jobs, some cotaining PBC's, asbetos, etc. Im only 43 years old, don't smoke, was running approx 35 miles per week and do not consume alcholic beverages. Can this Cancer of an Unknown Primary be caused by exposure to such chemicals. Any informationwould be appreciated.

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. Sorry to be so tardy with a reply. I suggest that you call our Cancer Center office here at KUMC, (913) 588-4700, or the National Cancer Institute at 1-800-4-CANCER. Thanks. (2001-04-24 10:17:00.0)

Suggestion: I have lived in the KU area all my life and I am upset over a certain issue. I live across the street from one of the hospitals parking lots. I have had campus police ask me on numerous occasions if I saw anyone "messing with cars" in the lot because several were vandilized. I also see campus police using radar and writing tickets. I see them at Quicktrip 6 blocks away from the hospital and even Rosedale Park a mile away from the hospital. Why are these officers not patroling the parking lots. Didn't a women get murdered in her car about 8 to 10 years ago in one of the lots on the south side of the hospital. Maybe if the campus police would spend more time patroling the parking lots there would not be vandels and murders taking place there. And if they are so concerned with writing ticket, why is it that you never see them radaring in the dead of winter when it is so cold out. Are they not as concerned about these speeders when it means that they will have to get out of their warm cars and into the cold? Is this what my tax money pays for? Please let me know, for if they are there to issue tickets then they should be on KCKPD"s payroll and not the hospital. I would like a response so I will know if I should write a letter to the govenor or not.

Response: Thank you for using the KUMC Suggestion Box. KU Police Department's primary obligation and responsibility is the protection of the lives and property of the members of the University community. State law and jurisdictional agreements with KCK were created to extend the authority of University Police to include off campus locations. The department has a secondary role of providing police services to the neighborhood community and assistance to KCK Police. Under the department's federally funded Community Policing grant, two Police Officers are assigned full time to work directly with citizens, businesses, schools, and churches in the Rosedale community. Part of the Community Policing program is to respond to citizen complaints, such as traffic safety issues (speeding, cross walks violations). Thus, traffic enforcement is directed in response to citizen concerns and towards high accident locations and violations. Thank you. (2001-04-19 13:28:00.0)

Suggestion: When we go to the point where yellow parking is free, one of the yellow lots should be changed to red and more red parking made available. The red parking waiting list doesn't seem to change.

Response: Thank you for using the KUMC Pulse Suggestion Box. Yellow Parking will not be "free". The Hospital does plan to pay (parking fees) for each of their employees, an amount equal to a Yellow permit. This is not expected to change the demand for Red or Yellow spaces. Usage of each color zone and lot is monitored daily and if appropriate, changes will be made.Thank you. (2001-04-19 10:09:00.0)

Suggestion: I think the site would be greatly improved with the addition of a detailed map of the hospital with information such as: department locations and other information that would aid visitors, patients, staff, and students in locating various departments in this hospital. As I am sure you know, it can be quite difficult to find certain areas in the hospital if one is not familiar with the maze of corridors. Please disregard if this information is currently available on the site. However, if it is, I have not been able to find it and that seems to be a slight problem in itself.Thank you for your time. The web site is great overall and very informative!

Response: There is an existing resource on our web site that we hope is already serving this function. From the home page at http://www.kumc.edu the first link on the left side near the top is a Locate/Contact Us. From that page there are maps of the Greater Kansas City area, maps of the University campus and a number of other resources of interest to students, faculty, staff and visitors.
