Suggestions and Responses for KU Medical Center

Suggestions and responses for 1997

Suggestion: Why is Dr. Casparian not listed in the dermatology section on pulse, and why has the presentation on laser surgery been removed from the video display outside the cafeteria (it got lots of good feedback)?

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. Each department has a person responsible for updating their section of the phone directory on Pulse. The appropriate people have been contacted. Regarding the kiosk, I contacted Randy Attwood, University Relations, who oversees the Kiosk. Randy said "there is only so much room for videos on the kiosk and we have to remove some to make room for new ones. That one was chosen as one of the older ones there to remove, but it is nice to know it's missed." Thanks again, Deb Brogden, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, x1440 (1997-12-23 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: I need informations about the medicine SHARK CARTILAGE. I want to know if this product is efficacy at the treatmente of ostheoporosis or no. Thank you. (sent from Brazil).

Response: I understand that our Drug Information pharmacist was in contact directly with you and will be mailing you hard copy information on shark cartilage. Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. (1997-12-23 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: It would be helpful to include hours and days of operation for the Med center bookstore, etc.

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. The KUMC Bookstore does have a home page which lists the days and hours of operation. You can locate this information at http://www.kumedbooks.com/ or just select Bookstore from the Resources menu page. Thank you, Debra Brogden, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor (1997-12-04 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: Could someone please give a message to Rick Deeds, M.D. in the E.R.? I was tring to e-mail him and I can't figure out his e-mail address. Thank you!

Response: You may contact Dr. Deitz at rdeitz@kumc.edu. (1997-12-04 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: I'm looking for information about preventive medicine. Why isn't it listed?

Response: We're sorry you were unable to find the information you were looking for. I used our search engine, searched for the phrase preventive medicine and found 162 documents including a page for the Department of Preventive Medicine. Their URL is http://www.kumc.edu/prevent/. Please try again. Thank you for your comment. (1997-11-21 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: You have links for suggestions from patients, students, researchers, healthcare professionals and visitors. What about the employees of KUMC in general? I believe there are several thousands of us. Do you think you could add an easily accessible link in this main feedback area? I am an employee of KUMC but not a healthcare professional, but I like to think my contributions to the environment there matters to myself, my fellow employees and at least indirectly, our patients.

Response: Thank you for your comment. Everyone's suggestions are valued. The form for suggestions about KUMC does not ask if you are an employee, student, etc. The form for suggestions about Pulse does have a category for KUMC staff. The link to the suggestion forms is in the toolbar at the bottom of every main Pulse page. I'm wondering if you are perhaps referring to the categories on the main home page that begin with "Information for..."? If so, that page does not include employees because it is intended for use primarily by visitors. The main resources page is intended to be the home page for employee. If you are at the main home page, just select Resources from the blue toolbar along the bottom of the page. Thank you again for your comment. Please let me know if your question has not been answered. Cheryl Pace, Assistant Director for Information Services (1997-11-21 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: This is actually a question. How many beds are in your hospital?

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. Currently, the hospital has 518 beds. Deb Brogden, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor (1997-10-13 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: I am actually interested in sending an e-mail to a patient there, at KU Medical Center. I can not find this access, and thought I would suggest the possibility. Thank you for your time.

Response: Thank you for your comment. I received the following information from our Information Technology (IT) department. Patients at the KU Medical Center are not provided with individual email addresses. However, if a patient already has an email address and brings a laptop to the hospital with them, our Information Technology department would be happy to assist them in getting set up so they can access their email. - Cheryl Pace, Assistant Director for Information Services (1997-10-13 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: This is not an improvement for Pulse - but rather for the Med Center itself. I am an employee who parks south of Olathe Blvd and crosses Olathe numerous times in the course of the week. I'd like to know why, on 39th Street, those cross walks are marked with signs and lights directing all traffic to stop for pedestrians, whereas on Olathe Blvd. you have to take your life into your own hands crossing there. Why aren't both streets marked the same? Personally I'm a little tired of trying to avoid being a hood ornament for the less than courteous drivers who fly through Olathe Blvd.! Thank you.

Response: Your message was forwarded to Mr. Rick Johnson in Public Safety. This is how Mr. Johnson responded to your message: "There are plans to erect flashing pedestrian lights on Olathe Blv. We hope to have the work completed within the next few months. Thank you for your comments, Rick Johnson, Director of Public Safety". Thanks for using the KUMC Suggestion Box. Deb Brogden, Office of the EVC, x1440 (1997-09-29 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: I think that the answering and scheduling system for Family Medicine is in need of a drastic change. When trying to schedule an appointment I had to go through approximately 8 minutes of AUDIX options just to get the message to leave: Your name, d.o.b ..etc and someone would call back. However after over three hours without a call back or a person to speak with I finally had to go to FAMMED in person to schedule an appointment. Keep in mind that I had left about 4-5 messages and this does not include the calls that I hung up on. I am an employee here and this to me is one of, if not the most frustating services I have ever encountered. I have even more concern for the people who are not able to come to KUMC to make an appointment. What is a person to do in this situation? After this fiasco, if I had a choice of clinics other than FAMMED that is where I would go. I know this isn't a solution to the problem, but it is definately one that needs to be addressed expediently!!!

Response: The administrator in Family Medicine replied: " We are in the final stages of developing a totally new phone system that will include a new, shortened menu plus real, live operators(!) to handle our callers. A few weeks ago we did implement some temporary stop-gap measures with respect to our appointment scheduling process and had a great amount of success with it with respect to patient satisfaction. Our hope is to implement the new system sometime this fall. But, in the meantime, we are working with a consultant, John Parker, who is normally in our office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. He is currently fielding complaints and does a great job of follow-up. I will ask him to call you. He doesn't have access to e-mail, but you can send any e-mail for him through me...or fax (1910) or campus mail in Family Medicine or phone #1900. We are very concerned about our ability to provide the best in customer service, and have some very good people here who are working hard to devise ways to accomplish this."

I was happy to report that Family Medicine is already taking steps to implement a new telephone system. Thank you for letting me know of your complaint. Let me know if there is anything else I can do. Thanks. Debra Brogden, Office of the EVC, x1440 (1997-09-29 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: I actually have a question instead of a suggestion. Does the Med Center have any volunteer positions, and if so, what kind?

Response: Thank you for using the Pulse Suggestion Box. The Medical Center does have a Volunteer Office. I suggest you contact Mrs. Susan Mong, at extension 6528. Mrs. Mong is the Senior Coordinator of Volunteer and Ambassador Services. Thanks, Deb Brogden , Office of the EVC (1997-09-29 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: When are you going to finish constructing your site completely and the education sites are under construction since Jan 97, when are they going to be available for teaching?

Response: Many of our educational sites in the Virtual Classroom are completed, however, many continue to evolve. Most have an email link to the instructor if you have specific questions. There maybe other educational sites on Pulse not in the Virtual Classroom. If you are looking one of those, let me know and I will follow up with the department. Linda L. Davies, Ph.D., Director, Academic Support and Deb Brogden, Office of the EVC (1997-08-29 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: I have been frustrated in my attempts to contact you by e-mail. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I can't seem to find a e-mail address on either KU-Med or KU in general. I'm simply trying to locate information on a former student. Sorry to use your suggestion section for this purpose. But it seemed the only way to contact you (other than snail-mail or phone). Thanks.

Response: I contacted the Student Services Department, Ms. Kathy Parkhill. I am asking her to respond to you regarding obtaining information on the former KU student. Thank you. Deb Brogden, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, (913) 588-1440 (1997-08-29 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: The connecting bridge from the foyer of Wahl Hall East to the first floor of Bell exudes a smell not unlike urine. This should certainly be addressed to provide a pleasant environment for employees, students, and guests.

Response: Thank you for bringing to our attention your comment. Yesterday, Dr. Roger Lambson took a walk through the bridge between Wahl East and the 1st floor KU Hospital. Dr. Lambson did not smell any odors. I would suggest that when and if you do come across this odor again you call me at extension 1440 and I will take a walk over to the bridge to see where the smell could possibly be coming from. I too will walk the bridge a few times a week to see if I smell anything. You are correct in that KUMC would like to provide a pleasant environment for employees, students, and guests. Thanks, again, for your comment. - Deb Brogden

Additional response: I did another walk through of the bridge connecting Wahl East/Lied/KU Hospital. I did notice the same odor you described in your message. Dr. Roger Lambson, Vice Chancellor for Administration, sent a message to our department of Facilities Management asking the department to check the wall units and the smell eliminated. I will continue to check the bridge to make sure this odor is addressed/eliminated. Thanks, again. - Debra Brogden (1997-08-29 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: I suggest that disposable toilet seat covers be installed in all the restrooms around the Med Center. It is very unsanitary to be sitting down on the seat where someone else has set. This would save on the waste of toilet tissue.

Response: Response:Thank you for your suggestion. I have forwarded your message to the Director of Environmental Services and have asked Mr. Bailey to do some investigating on what it would cost the University to install disposable toilet seat covers in our restrooms. I will let you know what Mr. Bailey says. There are approximately 300 restrooms on campus and I think this type of expense may need to be discussed as a possible future University budget item. Thanks, again, for your suggestion. - Deb Brogden, Office of the EVC

Additional response: Mr. Randy Bailey, Director of Environmental Services, replied: "Thanks, Deb, for forwarding the suggestion. Marcia Gilliland (Infection Control) and I have discussed disposable toilet seat covers before. According to her, there is no scientific evidence that the covers prevent disease from spreading. In addition, our hospital consultants, McFaul and Lyons, with whom we are working in terms of cost containment and product selection issues, have also recommended not using this type of product. Typically, they often cause more mess by ending up on the floor. My recommendation is not to use them; however, if you have more comments or information for me to consider, I'd welcome them. Thanks. Randy". Thanks, again, for your suggestion. - Deb Brogden, Office of the EVC (1997-08-29 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: THE PROBLEM THE KUPI EMPLOYEES THAT WORK IN THE WESCOE BLDG ON THE FOURTH FLOOR IS WE HAVE AIR CONDITION ONE DAY OUT OF EVERY WEEK STARTING JUNE 1, 1997. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO WORK IN THESE CONDITION AND BE PRODUCTIVE. WE HAVE CALL FO SEVERAL TIMES BUT ARE RESPONSE IS NEGATIVE. PLEASE HELP US GET AIR CONDITION THAT IS REGULATED SO THAT IT CUT ON AND OFF. IN THE PAST THE AIR IN THIS OFFICE IS NOT REGULATORY. ONCE IT IS ON IT STAYS ON AND ONCE IT IS OFF IT STAYS OFF. THANKING YOU IN ADVANCE.

Response: I have turned your concern over to the appropriate people in our Department of Facilities Management. Thank you for letting us know of the problem. - Debra Brogden, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, x1440 (1997-07-30 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: In regards to your same day surgery department, I have a few suggestions. First, when a surgery is to be delayed, please inform the patient. In addition to this, a three hour wait after the scheduled appointment to tell the patient this information is absurd. Your staff has very much difficulty in responding to the patients interests and needs. Finally, the staff has done nothing to make the patients and relatives feel more comfortable while in the waiting room when excessive time delays occur. We are asked to inform the hospital when we are to miss an appointment ahead of time, perhaps you could inform the patient when you must cancel yours. I am overall disappointed in your system at this time.

Response: Thanks so much for letting us know of your experience with Same Day Surgery. I am asking Mr. Jeff Struchtemeyer in the Patient Affairs Office to speak with the staff of Same Day Surgery to make sure this does not happen again. On behalf of the University of Kansas Medical Center and Same Day Surgery, I apologize for unfortunate experience. - Debra Brogden, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, x1440

Additional response from Jeff Struchtemeyer: We are starting a survey for SDS patients the beginning of August. (1997-07-30 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: I suggest the switchboard operators and the information desk utilize the phone directory on Pulse. This distributes the responsibility for maintenance and should result in a more current listing for the switchboard. Thanks.

Response: Thanks for the suggestion. I agree that the Pulse telephone directory would be a great help for the switchboard operators and information desk staff. Unfortunately, the switchboard does not have access to Pulse, they do not have a PC. Telecommunications currently updates the switchboard's current system. Susan Mong and Linda Main are working with Telecommunications to do the best they can right now to keep the list as current as possible. Let us know if you have further questions or concerns. Thank you, Debra Brogden , Office of the EVC, x1440 (1997-07-30 09:13:00.0)

Suggestion: Perhaps I am not reading your web page correctly. I would like to see a listing of all of your rheumatologists. Additionally, I would like to know if they are also certified in immunology. Thanks.

Response: hanks for your questions. By copy of this e-mail message to Cheryl Pace, Pulse Development Unit, I am asking her to respond to your questions also. We should have a listing of the Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy, Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology out on Pulse. So the information may already be there but you are just looking in the wrong place. Debra Brogden, Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor, x1440

Additional response: Thank you for your comment. All of our departments are not up on Pulse yet. Unfortunately that includes many of the clinical departments. If you go to the Resources page, then the Telephone Directory and enter rheumatology, you will get the listings for all personnel in rheumatology. In addition, the Business and Strategic Development deparment is almost finished with the new Physician Referral Directory. This directory will be available in print format and on Pulse. It will also provide the information you are looking for. Look for it soon under the General Information and Information for Patients links from our home page. Thanks, Cheryl Pace.
