Visiting Medical Students-Kansas City Campus Application Requirements and Process

 

Requirements

In order to do a rotation at KUMC, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Currently in good standing at an LCME accredited medical school or AOA accredited school of osteopathic medicine
  • Approved by your home institution to participate in an away elective at KUMC
  • Have passed USMLE/COMLEX Step 1
  • Covered by at least $1,00,000/$3,000,000 worth of malpractice insurance
  • Completion of HIPAA training at your home school
  • Passage of a criminal background check. If you have not completed a criminal background check, you must complete one through KUMC's vendor prior to submitting your application. More Information
  • Have been instructed in safety measures and infection control precautions
  • Personal health insurance coverage
  • Completion of KUMC's immunization requirements
  • Have completed the following core clerkship requirements before the rotations begins
    • Surgery
    • Medicine
    • Psychiatry
    • Family Medicine
    • OB/GYN
    • Pediatrics

All of the above is subject to verification by your home institution's student affairs representative.

Application Process

Students from LCME Schools
Applications are accepted via the AAMC's Visiting Student Application Service. The services will be available April 1, 2008. You will need to have you home school's student affairs contact authorize you to use the service.

Osteopathic Students
The following information must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar no later than 30 days prior to the start of the rotation. Once received, the Office of the Registrar will contact you to let you know if your application has been accepted and instructions on where to report the first day of the rotation.

  • KUMC Visiting Student Application Form
  • Home School Verification Form completed by your home school student affairs office
  • Completion of the KUMC Confidentiality Agreement
  • $35 non-refundable application fee. You can submit a check with your application or credit card.

You can only apply for two different rotations per application. Examples of acceptable applications include:

  • The same rotation with two different dates
  • Two different rotations with different dates
  • Two different rotations with the same dates

If you are approved for the same rotation with different dates or rotations with the same dates, you will have the opportunity to decide which one to accept.

Accepted Applications

If you are accepted or rejected for a rotation at KUMC, the Office of the Registrar will contact you by email. If accepted, you will be provided with instructions from the clinical department on where to report the first day of the rotation. All visiting students are required to pay $50 tuition and fees per semester. You will receive a bill in the mail with instructions on how to pay your tuition and fees. You are also advised to bring a copy of your school's evaluation form with you on the first day.
