Computer & Internet Questions

Do I need a computer?

A personal computer is highly desirable for accessing online course material and other pertinent student information from home. Most KUMC students have a computer at home; an increasing number are bringing laptop and tablet computers to campus. The University makes a number of computers available on campus for student use.

Students in the School of Nursing's and the School of Allied Health's Distance Education Programs are required to have a computer that meets KUMC standards.

Students in the School of Medicine will purchase a tablet PC provided to them during orientation. A portion of orientation will include instruction on use of the tablet in conjunction with the curriculum.

Whether or not you own a computer, you will need to regularly access and use online learning materials on KUMC web servers and in the Angel learning environment; communicate via email with instructors and colleagues; use Microsoft desktop applications (notably Word and PowerPoint); view PDF documents with the Adobe Reader; and use other applications and computer tools depending on the specific requirements of your program. You will find it convenient to store personal copies of materials on your computer's hard disk. The KUMC standard for portable storage is USB flash memory (also known as "flash drives", "keychain drives", "jump drives", etc.). Students who need file portability should acquire one or more flash memory drives. The library sells 128MB jump drives for $25.

Where are the student-use computers on campus?

The following areas have computers available for student use. All PC's are running Microsoft XP with Microsoft Office Suite, educational applications, SAS, SPSS, End Note, and GroupWise.

Location Number of PCs Hours Available
Wahl Hall West East Mezzanine 18 24/7
2nd Floor Orr-Major 8 24/7
1020 Student Center 7 24/7 by Card Access
Dykes Library 63 M-Th 7:30am-1:00am*
F 7:30am- 6:00pm
Sat 9:00am – 5:00pm
Sun 1:00pm – 1:00am*
*KUMC ID is required for access after 9pm.
Some KUMC schools and departments also have local PC labs. Consult with a faculty member or the department office for location and use information.

What are my options to connect to the internet from home?

To connect to the internet from home, you will need to subscribe to an internet provider (ISP). For a monthly fee, the ISP will provide you with access to the internet and usually other value added services. High speed access to the internet via cable modem or DSL is becoming more popular than the traditional “dial-up” method via a phone line and modem. As many KUMC classes have online content, we recommend obtaining high speed internet access. If you prefer the lower cost of "dial-up" with a modem, consider KUMC Online at $90.00 for 6 months of unlimited use. Go to the online registration form to sign up for KUMC Online.

Can I use my Macintosh to access KUMC student-oriented resources?

Generally KUMC systems are designed to support the Microsoft Windows platform and we encourage you to use Windows systems. Since most student-use resources are browser-based, the platform you use will ordinarily not be an issue. However, we cannot offer assurance that devices using the Mac, Linux, or other non-Windows operating systems will provide trouble-free access to all systems and resources.

What wireless resources are available?

The following high traffic student locations have access to the wireless network:

  • Dykes Library
  • Orr-Major
  • Wahl East & West auditoriums
  • School of Nursing Building
  • Taylor Hall
  • Study lounges in the Student Center

Can I get educational pricing on software from KUMC?

What computer-related training is available?

Web-based and Instructor-led courses available for KUMC employees are also available for students at no charge. To see the courses available visit the IR Training and Development web site.

What resources are available for my PDA/Pocket PC?

How can I get full text of articles found during a database search?

Dykes Library is excited to introduce Find It!, a service integrated with our databases that aids in the retrieval of full text journal articles.

As you search our databases you will see one of these blue and white Find It! buttons:

When you click this button you will be taken to a page listing the options to obtain full text of the article.

The first option will be a direct link to full text online, if available, through the library's electronic journal subscriptions. The "article" link will take you directly to the full text of the article while the "journal" link will take you to the home page of the journal in which the article appears.

A second option are searches of the library's catalog, either using the title or ISSN number. This will help determine if the journal is available in the print collection.

A third option is to request the article via Interlibrary Loan. Clicking on this option you wil take you directly to the ILLiad log-in page and help facilitate a speedy Interlibrary Loan request by filling in most of the form for you.
