New Student Health Insurance Policy Available For KUMC Students

By Sara Honeck
Director of Special Projects

Another school year is here, and along with that comes the ever exciting world of health insurance! Just a reminder - all students at the University of Kansas Medical Center are required to have health insurance while attending.

In the past, choices were limited for students needing to purchase a plan offered through KUMC. While the State of Kansas offered a good, basic health insurance policy, it was no secret that many students on our campus wanted a more comprehensive insurance policy than the one offered through the State. This has been a big year for student health insurance on the KUMC campus! This past year, we were hard at work with your Student Governing Council on increasing health insurance options, and now our students have choices in the coverage they buy!

To view each plan, go to www.studentresources.com and compare:

  • Univ of KS Senate/Univ of KS Medical Center – new KU/KUMC plan
  • University of Kansas Medical Center – old State of Kansas plan

Just a few of the differences:

  • The KU/KUMC policy includes coverage for chemo/radiation therapy with no additional charge
  • The KU/KUMC policy has stronger prescription coverage, including the following:
    • $1,000 maximum coverage (compared to $250 on State plan)
    • No deductible needs to be met before coverage begins (on State plan, you had to have covered your $500 deductible before prescription coverage began)
    • $5/copay at KUMC pharmacy
    • Coverage for allergy medication

For a spreadsheet comparing the different policies in more depth, please contact shoneck@kumc.edu. She’ll be happy to email you a copy of the main differences.

Both the State of Kansas Plan and the University of Kansas Senate/ University of Kansas Medical Center Student Governing Council plan are administered by Student Insurance and underwritten by MEGA Life and Health Insurance Company.

Have a great year, and try to be careful enough to not need your insurance!
