Healthy Bodies for Healthy MindsStudent Health Home | HBHM Home Items in the News-Meningitis By Stephanie Jernigan Meningitis is an infection of the spinal cord and fluid that surrounds the brain. It can be caused by a virus or bacteria. There is an immunization to prevent some strains of bacterial meningitis. This vaccine is recommended for those persons who are traveling to an endemic country, who have an immune disorder or will be a college freshman living in a communal living situation, such as a dorm. In addition, the vaccine may be used to control an outbreak. If you have any further questions concerning meningitis, the following website might be helpful: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/meningococcal_g.htm Meningitis is not a required vaccine for students on the medical center campus. However, if you would like to receive the meningitis vaccine, you can receive the immunization at student health. The cost is $94.00 and payment must be received the day before the immunization is to be given. Immunizations are given from 11am to 1 pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday or by appointment. If you have any questions about the vaccine or are wondering if you should receive the vaccine, please make an appointment with one of the providers at student health.
