Federal Aid Programs

Federal Pell Grant:
Is the foundation of Federal student financial aid. It is for undergraduate students who have exceptional financial need and do not have a prior Bachelors degree.

Deadline: None, can apply at anytime during an academic year.

Does it have to be repaid? No

If yes, when? NA

Award Maximum: $4731 dependent upon financial need, cost of attendance and enrollment status.

Need based: Yes

Enrollment: Full time, part time and less half time.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant: 
A grant awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. Pell Grant recipients receive priority for FSEOG.

Deadline: Priority deadline of February 14th

Award Maximum: anywhere from $100-$1100

Need based: Yes

Enrollment: Full time

Federal Perkins Loan:
Low Interest loan available to students with financial need. Interest does not accrue while in school. Upon graduation Perkins loans can be partially cancelled at the end of each year of employment for Nursing and/or Allied Health program of study students if you are working within the nursing and/or Allied Health field. KUMC is the lender of this loan.

Deadline: Priority deadline of February 14th

Interest Rate: 5% Fixed

Does it have to be repaid? Yes

If yes, when?  9 months after graduation

Award Maximum: Varies $1500-$4000

Need based: Yes

Enrollment: At least 6 or more credit hours

Federal Nursing Loan:
Low interest loan offered to undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Interest does not accrue while in school at least half time. KUMC is the lender of this loan.

Deadline: February 14

Interest Rate: 5% Fixed

Does it have to be repaid?  Yes

If yes, when?  9 months after graduation  

Award Maximum: $2500 for graduates and undergraduates

Need based: Yes

Enrollment: at least 6 or more credit hours

Parent PLUS loan:  
Only parents of a dependent undergraduate students are eligible to apply for a Parent PLUS loan. Parents must not have a negative credit history.

Deadline: None

Interest Rate: 8.5% Fixed

Does it have to be repaid? Yes

If yes, when? 60 days after the final disbursement. However, under certain circumstances parents can receive deferment and forbearance options. Included in this is the in-school deferment. You will want to check with your lender to see if this is offered.

Federal GradPLUS loan:
Grad
Plus loans are federally guaranteed credit based loans. Only Graduate and Professional students are eligible to apply for this loan.

Deadline: None

Interest Rate: 8.5% Fixed

Does it have to be repaid? Yes

If yes, when? Repayment begins 60 days after the final disbursement. However, under certain circumstances students can receive deferment and forbearance options. Included in this is the in-school deferment. You will want to check with your lender to see if this is offered.

Award Maximum: Up to cost of attendance minus other aid and resources

Need based: No

Enrollment: student must be enrolled in 6 or more credit hours

Federal Stafford Subsidized Loan:
Is a federal loan that has a fixed interest rate for loans after July 1st, 2006. There is a 6 month grace period  after you graduate or drop below half time before repayment is required. The loan does NOT accrue interest while the student is in school.

Federal Stafford Unsubsidized Loan:       
Is a federal loan that has a fixed interest rate for loans after July 1, 2006. There is a 6 month grace period  after you graduate or drop below half time before repayment is required. The loan DOES accrue interest while the student is in school. Interest begins accruing as soon as the loan is disbursed. Students can make quarterly interest payments or let the interest capitalize.

Federal Work Study:         
This program provides jobs for Undergraduate and Graduate students with financial need, allowing students to earn money to help pay educational expenses. This program encourages community service work and work related to each student’s course of study, where applicable. Students are responsible for securing the employment of campus.

Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students:
Medical students can apply for the Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students. This scholarship is awarded to students who come from an economic or environmentally disadvantaged background. Parental information is required.

Award Maximum: Award amounts vary depending on the funding levels each year.

Need based: Yes

Primary Care Loan: 
Medical students may qualify to receive a Primary Care Loan if they agree to enter and complete a residency training program in primary health care (family practice, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, or preventive medicine) no later than 4 years after graduation.

Deadline: None

Interest Rate: 5% Fixed. The student must agree to practice primary health care until the loan is repaid in full.

Does it have to be repaid? Yes

If yes, when?  Recipients who do not fulfill the primary care requirements must repay the unpaid balance due on the loan at 18% interest, compounded annually from the date the loan was issued.Borrowers failing to comply with the agreement must repay the loan within 10 years. http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/dsa/pcl.htm

State Aid Programs

Kansas Medical Student Loan:
This loan is established to encourage students of Kansas to practice primary care medicine in the State of Kansas. For the people of Kansas, the State Legislature has established the Kansas Medical Student Loan Program to assist students at KUMC. The Kansas Medical Student Loan is awarded on an annual basis, in return for agreements to practice medicine in Kansas after residency. For additional information please review our KMSL informational sheet at KMSL - Information Sheet 08-09.

Deadline: February 14th for first year students

Does it have to be repaid? Any person who fails to satisfy the service obligation must repay within ten (10) years to the University of Kansas an amount equal to the sum of money received in tuition payments and living expenses plus interest at the rate of 15 percent, from the date such money was received, with the first installment payment commencing 6 months after the date of the action or circumstances that causes the failure of the student to satisfy the obligations of this agreement.

Award Maximum: Medical student tuition and monthly stipend

Need based: No

Kansas Medical Retroactive Student Loan:

Depending on availability, the Kansas Medical Student Loan can be awarded retroactively. Students who did not take out the KMSL when they first enrolled as a medical student may be eligible to receive it in later years, for up to the full amount that would have been received if it had been offered as an incoming student. For each Retro KMSL contract a student receives, one year of obligation will be required. For more details on the obligation, please refer to the information under Kansas Medical Student Loan

Recipients of the Retro KMSL will be expected use Retro KMSL funds to repay student loans borrowed while in medical school. Any funds remaining after your medical student loan debt has been repaid can be used for other school related expenses.

Deadline: Students interested in the Retro KMSL must complete a Retro KMSL application and submit it to the Student Financial Aid Office no later than October 31, 2008.

Does it have to be repaid? For each Retro KMSL contract a student receives, one year of obligation will be required. Kansas Nursing Service Scholarship:
Designed to encourage enrollment in nursing programs by Kansans committed to practicing in Kansas. Recipients sign agreements to practice nursing at specific facilities one year for each year of scholarship support. There are academic requirements. Interest Rate: If the recipient changes majors or decides not to work for the sponsor as a nurse, the scholarship becomes a loan (with an interest rate equal to the Federal Plus Loan + an additional 5% subject to change annually) accruing from the date scholarship

Kansas State Scholarship:
State scholars are Kansas residents who receive State Scholar designation in their senior year of high school. Criteria include having taken the ACT Assessment between April of the sophomore year and December of the senior year, AND completing the Kansas Scholars Curriculum. The 7th semester cumulative GPA and curriculum data are provided by high school officials to the Board of Regents in March. Kansas Comprehensive Grant:
Kansas Comprehensive Grants are available to needy undergraduate Kansas residents

Kansas Ethnic Minority Scholarship:
The Kansas Ethnic Minority Scholarship program is designed to assist financially needy, academically competitive students who are identified as members of any of the following ethnic/racial groups: African American, American Indian or Alaskan Native; Asian or Pacific Islander; or Hispanic. Institutional Aid Programs

Endowment Scholarships:
Are awarded through a student’s individual department. You will need to contact your department to inquire how they award their scholarship dollars.


KU Bookstore Grant:
The Bookstore Grant is a limited fund institutional grant. Funds for the Bookstore Grant were generated by the sale of the University Bookstore. The grant is designed to help meet students' remaining need.

KU Tuition Grant:
The KU Tuition Grant (KUTG) is a limited fund institutional grant. Funds for the KUTG are generated by tuition revenue and designed to help meet students' additional remaining need due to the tuition enhancement increases.

Endowment Loans: 
Low interest loan that accrues interest while you are in school. You will repay the KU Endowment Association beginning 1 year after graduation. A co-signer is required for any amount over $500.00.
