Financial Aid Process Checklist:
This checklist was designed to help you understand the steps involved in receiving federal financial aid at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Please contact our office if you have questions about this process. We can be reached Monday-Friday 8am-5pm at 913-588-5170 or by emailing us at financialaid@kumc.edu.
______________1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) via the Internet or with a paper application and submit it to the processor. Our school code for the FAFSA is 001948. Our priority deadline date is February 14th, 2008.
______________2. Access your PIN www.pin.ed.gov which serves as your electronic signature for the FAFSA application. The PIN also provides access to your federal loan records on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), and can be used to sign your Master Promissory Note for most of your Federal Loans.
_____________3. Complete the Student Data Form (PDF) and submit it the department of Student Financial Aid. (Not required for Medical Students)
_____________4. Student and school receive results of the FAFSA that are sent to the student in the form of a Student Aid Report (SAR) and sent to the school in an electronic file.
______________5. We send missing information e-mails informing you of any paperwork we still need. Your application will then be placed in a pending file until the requested information is received. Once all your paperwork is received, your file is reviewed for accuracy and completeness. You will ONLY be contacted if additional information is required.
______________6. Once your file has been reviewed, your financial aid awards are determined.
______________7. You are notified by e-mail that your awards are ready to be accepted on-line. The email will have instructions on where and how to accept your awards online.
______________8. If you accepted a Federal Stafford Loan and this is the first Stafford Loan you have borrowed at KUMC, you are required to complete a Master Promissory Note(MPN) once you have selected a lender.
______________9. If you are a first time borrower to KUMC and accept a Federal Stafford loan, you will be required to complete an Entrance Interview.
______________10. We then will process the financial aid that you selected. We work with the various entities to get your awards here by the scheduled date in order to get your payment to your account.
_____________11. Your aid will be disbursed electronically to your student fee account to pay any outstanding charges. Any remaining amount due will need to be paid by the due date in Student Financial Accounting. Student Financial Accounting is located in Support Services 120-B, 2100 W. 36th Ave, (913) 588-2590. If you are due a refund after your aid is disbursed to your fee account, you will be notified by an email from Student Financial Accounting that you have a refund ready. Accounting recommends you sign up for Direct Deposit to have any excess funds deposited to an account you designate. You can sign up for direct deposit on Enroll & Pay, in the Student Center section.
_____________12. If the aid has not arrived by the due date for tuition and fees, contact our office and request a tuition deferment. The deferment will prevent you from receiving late payment fee. Our office does not automatically defer tuition.
