Master Promissory Note (MPN)

New Direct Loan borrowers are required to complete an electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN) with Direct Lending. The eMPN is a legal and binding contract of your promise to repay the loan according to the terms listed on the promissory note.

If you have not previously completed a Direct Loan Program eMPN, you must complete an eMPN at the following website:  https://dlenote.ed.gov/empn/index.jsp.

You will be required to use your U.S. Department of Education issued PIN to complete an eMPN. For additional information or to ask general PIN questions, you can visit the official PIN site or access the PIN customer service web page.

You will be asked to provide:

  • Permanent address
  • Driver’s license number and state
  • Email address
  • Telephone number
  • Names, addresses and telephone numbers of two reference who have known you for at least three years

If you are a new borrower through the Federal Direct Loan Program at KUMC you are also required to complete the Loan Entrance Counseling and Quiz.  Please complete this requirement at least 3 weeks before classes are scheduled to begin. Please click on the following link and follow the instructions to complete this requirement:

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR BORROWERS:

You must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for federal student loans. The University of Kansas Medical Center considers half-time enrollment to be 6 credit hours for the fall and spring. For summer coursework KUMC considers 3 credit hours to be half-time enrollment. If your enrollment status drops to less than half-time, you no longer qualify for in-school deferment of your loan payments and you either begin your grace period or enter repayment. During your grace period you are not required to make payments, although unsubsidized interest will continue to accrue.

If you withdraw from the University prior to the completion of your program it is important that you contact the following the offices: Student Financial Aid, Registrar, and your program advisor. This is to ensure that the school can provide you with the appropriate exit counseling, including repayment and loan consolidation options.

If you have questions regarding your rights and responsibilities or the terms and conditions of the loan please contact Linda Gill, Senior Coordinator, at 913-588-5170.
