Dissertation Writers Group

The Writing Center at KU Medical Center sponsors a Dissertation Writing Group. Through this group we seek to provide and foster intensive, supportive exchange for students at the dissertation stage. All disciplines are welcome. All stages of writing are included. By participating in a workshop-type meeting, with writing mentors on hand, students will be able to work on nuts-and-bolts matters, time management, goal-setting, stress issues, and more.

The Writing Center in Dykes Library offers its space for group meetings, but participants can select any site where the group can meet and present.

An online component will also be created for meetings throughout the writing process to help students finish their thesis.

Duration and Size

Students may participate during any or all of the sessions (summer, fall, spring). Depending on participation, more than one group may be created.

  • Meetings will be regular, with a pre-circulated chapter.
  • Writing will be emphasized, with structured feedback and constructive critique.
  • Focus will be on "higher order" concerns first.
  • Each meeting will be organized around a central question, problem, or situation the writer is addressing.
  • A portion of the meeting will be reserved for Q&A, general discussion, announcements, and so on.
