Doctoral Counseling Practicum Student
Counseling & Educational Support Services
Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, University of Missouri-Kansas City (Anticipated May 2016)
B.A in Psychology and Creative Writing, Missouri State University (May 2010)
I am a Counseling Psychology trainee completing a practicum at the Counseling and Education Support Services (CESS) at The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) during the 2013-2014 academic year. I am in my fourth year of study in the Counseling Psychology program at UMKC, and I anticipate graduating with my Ph.D. in May 2016. As an undergraduate, I graduated summa cum laude from the honors college at Missouri State University with majors in Psychology and Creative Writing.
At CESS, I work with university students who present with a variety of concerns, including anxiety, depression, other mood disorders, family stress, multicultural concerns, financial strain, abuse, trauma, identity, and relationship and sexuality issues. Special areas of interest include performance enhancement, creativity, happiness, motivation, perfectionism, body image, women's issues, men's issues, sexual and gender identity exploration, and relationship enhancement. I also work as a research assistant with the Kansas City Area Education Research Consortium (KC-AERC) studying the transition from high school to college and as an adjunct instructor at UMKC teaching Effective Interpersonal Communication.
I enjoy working with university students because I believe that personal development is an inherent component of educational development. It is deeply moving for me to see the students I work with grow and meet their goals in and outside of counseling. I believe that every individual has the capacity to make healthy changes in their life, and that a counselor's roles are to help clients discover their personal strengths and explore internal and external barriers to success.
My hobbies include cooking, museum-hopping, trying new restaurants, playing pool and chess, learning about science, reading novels, antiquing, interior decorating, exploring parks and other outdoor spaces around Kansas City, and spending time with my miniature schnauzer, Phoebe, and tortoiseshell cat, Hazel.
