As the new full-time Graduate Writing Specialist at KUMC, my goal is to help you succeed. My approach is geared toward helping you understand writing as a process-which has different stages, different demands-and as a product. I don't judge your work; I support it by giving you feedback and suggesting ways to improve.
My work as a writing specialist is based on 20 years' experience as a university writing instructor, writing center tutor, magazine editor, and published writer. I have taught expository prose at several colleges, edited dissertations as a freelance consultant (including science manuscripts), and published scholarly essays in peer-reviewed journals.
Part of my work as the graduate writing specialist involves providing information on specific aspects of writing. Look for workshops on topics such as APA, prospectus writing, trimming the fat from your prose, plagiarism, and so on. We welcome feedback and suggestions from you about what you are interested in. Please tell us what you would like to see in terms of services.
I come to KUMC after two decades as a teacher of literature and writing. I have taught at the University of Arizona, William Jewell, Rockhurst, the University of New Mexico, KU, Northern Arizona University, and UMKC. My research focuses on poetry and poetics from the 19th to the 21st centuries. I am the author of Book of the Heart, a study of the English romantic poet John Keats; Night Song, a collection of poetry; Literatura Chicana, a bibliography of creative and critical writings by Mexican American authors; and numerous articles and essays in scholarly and popular journals.
I am delighted to be here at the KU Medical Center to support the work of students in all disciplines and areas as well as residents. I hope you will visit the Writing Center and join the conversation about writing, research, and publishing.
