Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Counseling Psychology is offered through Counseling and Educational Support Services at The University of Kansas Medical Center. The fellowship prepares emerging mental health professionals for independent practice at an advanced level of competence in a university counseling setting. The postdoctoral fellowship is a one year, full-time training experience.

The postdoctoral fellowship is designed to meet licensure requirements for postdoctoral supervision as specified in the statutes for licensure through the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board in the State of Kansas. These requirements include 12 months and at least 1800 hours of supervised work experience in a setting involving the provision of clinical psychological services which provides the fellow with contact with other disciplines, and the opportunity to utilize a variety of theories and work with a broad range of populations and techniques. At least 900 hours are spent rendering direct psychological services, and a minimum of 180 hours are dedicated to delivering general or non-clinical services. Individual supervision is provided at least one hour per 20 hours of direct client contact by a Kansas Licensed Psychologist who has been licensed/credentialed for at least two years. The requirements for postdoctoral training for Kansas licensure are set forth in the statutes governing the practice of psychology in Kansas, which may be found on the Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board website, particularly statue 102-1-5a. While requirements should generally meet criteria for licensure in other states, we will work with fellows who have any special requirements.

Prerequisites for post-doctoral fellows include degree and completion of all requirements for a Ph.D., Ed.D., or Psy.D. in Counseling or Clinical Psychology from an APA-accredited graduate program and completion of a one year full-time (or two year part-time) APA-accredited doctoral internship  in Counseling or Clinical Psychology.
