Writers Groups

The Writing Center sponsors programs tailored to doctoral students writing their dissertations. We facilitate a writers group and a basic training program for students in all disciplines, at all stages of the writing process.

Thesis Writers Group

This group offers intensive, supportive exchange for those engaged in thesis writing. The group meets in a workshop-like manner, with the Graduate Writing Specialist and another expert on hand, to deal with nuts-and-bolts matters, time management, goal-setting, and more.

The Writing Center in Dykes Library offers its space for group meetings, but participants can select any meeting site for the group.

An online component can be created to help students who are off campus or out of state to finish their thesis.

Duration and Size

Students may participate during any or all of the school sessions (fall, spring, summer). Depending on participation, more than one group may be created.

  • Meetings will be regular, with a manuscript provided to the group in advance.
  • Writing will be emphasized, with structured feedback and constructive critique.
  • Focus will be on "higher-order" concerns first.
  • Each meeting will be organized around a central question/problem/situation the writer is addressing.
  • A portion of the meeting will be reserved for Q&A, general discussion, announcements, etc.

New Groups:

Academic Writers

  • A semi-structured, publication-oriented group

Write-In Tuesdays

  • An informal group dedicating weekly time to learn from each other as writers
