Legislators Toolkit: Introduction
Public policies on stem cell research are being developed at many levels including national commissions, state task forces, professional guidelines, as well as in state legislatures and the U.S. Congress. At the executive level, President George W. Bush's August 2001 policy
statement set the tone for his administration's view on early human stem
cell research. Numerous efforts at the state and federal levels to further inhibit and promote early human stem cell research have ensued since that announcement.
This Legislator Toolkit provides up-to-date resources for legislators interested in learning more about stem cell research and current and pending policies in the United States.
This site provides an overview of federal, state, and Kansas public policies — both current and pending — as well as recent polling information.
In the fall of 2005, KUMC launched a seminar for Kansas Legislators called Stem Cell Research 101 for Legislators. This 3-hour seminar provides information on stem cell research and hands-on learning experiences.
