Class of 2006 Residency Review Seminar Online

CAREERS IN MEDICINE - (formerly MedCAREERS) is a career planning program designed to help you choose a medical specialty and select and apply to a residency program. This four-phase process will guide you through the elements of career planning, including self-understanding, exploring a variety of medical careers, and finally choosing a specialty to meet your career objectives. People whose choice of careers matches their values, skills and interests tend to be more satisfied and successful in their working lives. This is also true of selecting a specialty.

Careers in Medicine and Your School
The program includes a password-protected Web site, printed student manuals, school-sponsored workshops, and advisors. While developed and sponsored by the AAMC, the program is a partnership with your medical school's central administrative offices.

Careers in Medicine Web Site
Students must receive an access code from their school's CiM Liaison and register to begin using the Web site, which will guide you through the entire program. You can:

  • Complete, review and store the results of your online assessments in your secure, confidential Personal Profile
  • Review extensive career information about specialties through the CiM Specialty Pages
  • Access an online decision making tools designed to help you select a specialty and apply to residency programs.

FREIDA - Fellowship and Residency Interactive Data Base

Extramural Electives Compendium - online resource of elective opportunities available at all AAMC accredited medical schools.  Click first on Tools, then on Find, and enter the name of the state or school desired.

Career MD - Residency Find and Fellowship Find - search engines provide detailed contact information for every residency program in the country.  Program Statements - central on-line location where Program Directors publish extensive descriptions of their residency programs.  House Staff Profiles - current residents provide students with candid insider's perspectives of life at their programs.

IRIS - Listing of 4,000 Internships and Residencies in All Specialties.  Automated Information-By-Mail Request Service.  Online Program Information.  Direct Links to Program Website.

HRSA State Health Workforce Profiles - A comprehensive guide of current data on the supply, demand, distribution, education and use of physicians, nurses, dentists and twenty other health professionals in each state and the District of Columbia.

2002 Survey of Housestaff Stipends, Benefits and Funding - The report summarizes responses from 333 member hospitals and medical schools for the July 2000 through June 2001 academic year.

The resource includes introductory material for students considering a surgery career, surgical "traits," a how-to find a residency section, descriptions of the content of each of the specialties, and a geographical guide to the accredited programs in each specialty including responses to a survey distributed by the ACS in preparation for the site.
