CAREERS
IN MEDICINE
- (formerly MedCAREERS) is a career planning program designed to help you
choose a medical specialty and select and apply to a residency program.
This four-phase process will guide you through the elements of career
planning, including self-understanding, exploring a variety of medical
careers, and finally choosing a specialty to meet your career objectives.
People whose choice of careers matches their values, skills and interests
tend to be more satisfied and successful in their working lives. This
is also true of selecting a specialty.
Careers in Medicine and Your
School
The program includes a password-protected Web site, printed student
manuals, school-sponsored workshops, and advisors. While developed and
sponsored by the AAMC, the program is a partnership with your medical
school's central administrative offices.
Careers in Medicine Web Site
Students must receive an access code from their school's CiM Liaison
and register to begin using the Web site, which will guide you through the
entire program. You can:
- Complete, review and store the
results of your online assessments in your secure, confidential Personal
Profile
- Review extensive career
information about specialties through the CiM Specialty Pages
- Access an online decision
making tools designed to help you select a specialty and apply to
residency programs.

Surgery
- The "So you want to be a surgeon...a medical student guide to finding, and matching
with, the best possible surgery residency," is online at http://www.facs.org/residencysearch/index.html
This is an electronic version of the "little red book" so familiar with general
surgery faculty advisors, now expanded to include all surgery specialties that admit PGY1
residents through the NRMP (general surgery, neurological surgery, obstetrics and
gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, and
urology). The resource includes introductory material for students considering a surgery
career, surgical "traits," a how-to find a residency section, descriptions of
the content of each of the specialties, and a geographical guide to the accredited
programs in each specialty including responses to a survey distributed by the ACS in
preparation for the site.
