about student life at the School of Medicine and how you can best prepare
your application.
Our key note speaker is nationally known Oncologist, Dr.
Gary Doolittle. Dr. Doolittle
serves as professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology,
specializing in melanoma malignancies. He has been instrumental in developing
and providing consultation services for KUMC’s Center for Tele-medicine
and Tele-health through the Tele-oncology program.
Also, take advantage of the opportunity to talk to current medical students,
learn about how technology is used in the new curriculum, receive an
overview of the new curriculum, have a mock patient encounter, learn
how you can study abroad while you are in medical school and much, much
more!!
Insight into Interviewing
Following the
presentation of general information on the interview process, a mock
interview will be conducted. Time will be allowed
for Q and A with the presenter.

Lab
We know you want to see the cadaver lab—this is the next best
thing. See human remains the medical students study before they
dive into the second-semester cadaver dissection.
Problem-Based Learning Groups
This is how medical students learn and study—in a problem-based
learning (PBL) group. Receive a brief explanation and then break
out into a PBL group and diagnose what is wrong with Bessy Buick!
Life Science Innovation Center
Interested in research? Receive a tour of the newest building
on campus, the Life Science Innovation Center and see the labs where
ground-breaking medical research is taking place right here in Kansas.
The Clinical Skills Lab Experience
Would you like to see where our students hone their clinical skills
and how they do it? Experience a standardized patient and put
your clinical skills to the test in a mock-patient encounter!
International Studies
Learn and travel while in medical school by studying overseas! Learn
more about opportunities KU-SOM students have to travel while in school. Our
students go everywhere from Ireland to Fiji to Africa…come find

Technology and Studying Medicine
Tablet computers, pocket PCs, iPods…it’s all integrated
into the medical school curriculum. How can you make it work
for you? Drs. Jim Fishback and Bob Klein, along with KU-SOM techie
Mike Karr, will help you understand how to make technology work with
your study habits, not against them!
Medical School Tours
Is this the first time you’ve been on campus? If so, take
a student-led campus tour. Please note, the tours do not include
the anatomy lab or the hospital.
Medicine on the Prairie: Practicing Medicine in Rural Kansas
and the SOM Rural Track Program
Listen to practicing physicians talk about their love for practicing
medicine in small-town America. Find out about our Rural Track
Program and have an opportunity to ask questions about what it is like
to be a community leader.

A panel of recently accepted students will share their preparation
strategies and respond to your questions.
