There are many School of Medicine scholarship opportunities available for currently enrolled and incoming medical students for the upcoming academic year. Recipients of the Kansas Medical Student Loan (KMSL), National Health Service Corp Scholarship, Indian Health Service Scholarship, military scholarship or students enrolled in a combined degree program are ineligible for School of Medicine scholarships.
Generally, two types of scholarships exist: Those for which you apply directly to the sponsoring agency and scholarships that are awarded by the School of Medicine Scholarship Committee. Scholarship awards that are determined by the Office of Cultural Enhancement and Diversity will be based on the School of Medicine scholarship application and reviewed by the Scholarship Committee as well.
School of Medicine scholarships are generally non-renewable and may be based on financial need and/or merit as well as responses to the questions on the application. Please be aware that only those who complete the School of Medicine scholarship application will be considered for a scholarship, and you must reapply each year.
For all currently enrolled students, the deadline for completion of the scholarship application is Wednesday, February 15, 2012. All incoming students will receive an e-mail with a specific deadline date based on their date of acceptance. Applications received after specified deadlines will not be considered.

Air Force Health Professions Scholarship Program - The Air Force offers Health Professions Scholarships for three and four year periods. The scholarship pays for full tuition, required fees, textbooks, small equipment and related supply. Recipients also receive more than a monthly allowance for living expenses. Air Force Financial Incentives Program - The Air Force is offering financial incentives allowing you to complete residency training at your current hospital see flier FAP POSTER FY11.
The American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation's Seed Grant Research Program provides one-year grants of up to $2,500 to medical students, residents, and fellows to help them conduct small basic science, applied, or clinical research projects. Grants will be awarded for research projects on Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases, HIV/AIDS, Neoplastic Diseases and Pancreatic Cancer. The application deadline is December 5th, 2011. National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Scholarships (one application for all three) :
1. Alice W. Rooke Scholarship- Sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a $5,000 scholarship awarded for up to four years to students of high scholastic standing and character who have been accepted into or are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (no pre-med) at an approved, accredited medical school. 2. Dr. Francis Anthony Beneventi Medical Scholarship - Sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a $5,000 scholarship awarded for up to four years for a student attending or planning to attend an approved, accredited medical school, college or university. The applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.25. The award is renewable annually for up to four consecutive years, pending proof of continued enrollment and after the first semester, an annual transcript review indicating a minimum GPA of 3.25. 3. Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship - Sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a $5,000 scholarship awarded for up to four years to students of high scholastic standing and character who have been accepted into or are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor (no pre-med) at an approved, accredited medical school. AMWA Medical Education Scholarships - The American Medical Women's Association will be awarding two $1000 scholarships to women currently enrolled in medical school. Awardees will be chosen based on need as well as embodiment of the goals of AMWA. Financial need, though not a requirement, is also considered. Applications are accepted at two different times during the year (see website for specific dates). Please send completed applications to awards@amwa-student.org. Army's Health Professions Scholarship Program - The Army offers one of the most generous and comprehensive scholarships in the health care field. It’s called the F. Edward Herbert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP, for short). If you qualify, you could earn a full-tuition scholarship, plus a monthly allowance through the Army’s HPSP.
Scholarship Eligibility: Be a citizen of the United States; Meet eligibility criteria for appointment as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Reserve; Maintain full-time student status during the entire length of the program.
What does the Army pay for?
Tuition: You select the school, obtain acceptance, and apply for the scholarship. If selected, 100% tuition is paid to any accredited professional school in the United States or Puerto Rico.
Books/ Fees/ Reimbursable: The Army will pay for required books, rental of non-expendable equipment, and most academic fees.
Monthly Stipend: A generous monthly stipend of more than $1,992.00 will be provided for ten and one-half months of each school year.
Army Officer Pay: For the remaining six weeks of the school year, you will receive the full pay and allowances offered a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserve. After graduation and entrance on active duty, you’ll be promoted to Captain, which means more pay. Your salary will increase through the years with promotions, time in service, and annual cost of living increases. You’ll also receive a monthly non-taxable allowance for your food and housing.

Arthur Miller Scholarship - Bank of America, N.A.. The Arthur M. Miller Fund is a fund that has been established for charitable, scientific or educational purposes. Grants can be given to worthy persons studying or practicing in medical or allied fields leading to an accredited degree programs for registered nurses and medical doctors (Osteopaths, Naturopaths, Podiatrists, Chiropractors and Optometrists are specifically excluded from the definition of medical doctors). No immediate family member of the Advisory Committee or of any employee of Bank of America, N.A is eligible for this fund. Candidates will be selected based upon financial need and general character. C.E. Boudreau Scholarship - Administered by Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. For medical students who graduate from a Butler County High School. List of detailed information required: Current financial status and current/future financial obligations. Detailed information regarding the use of money required. Chinese American Physicians Society - CAPS is offering five scholarships of $2000 to $4000 each to needy students in United States medical schools. The CAPS Scholarships are open to all medical students in need of financial aid regardless of their hometown, sex, race or color. The applicants are judged according to their academic achievements, financial needs, community service records and their views on the practice of medicine as expressed in their essays. Chinese American Medical Society Scholarship- The Chinese American Medical Society offers 3 to 5 scholarships yearly to first, second or third year medical and/or dental students and scientists to promote the scientific association of medical professionals of Chinese descent. ESA Foundation Scholarships - ESA Foundation is a nonprofit organization pledged to develop philanthropic activities of volunteers, provide assistance to established programs that serve human needs and provide new programs to improve the quality of life. The organization awards more than 100 scholarships and grants nationwide, including about 35 in Kansas and 38 in Missouri. Application deadline is February 1. Hays Memorial Scholarship - Medical students who are natives of Johnson County, Miami County, Franklin or Lynn County and are currently enrolled in an accredited medical school are invited to apply for the annual Hays Scholarship sponsored by the physicians/medical staff of Olathe Medical Center. This scholarship will be presented to one medical student per year, in remembrance of the late Dr. Larry V. Hays, a former Olathe Surgeon. The recipient of this award will be recognized as an exceptional scholar in the community and will be awarded a $1,000 stipend in order to assist with educational expenses. The Scholarship Committee will consider medical students who have achieved an outstanding academic and leadership record. Deadline to apply is early April. Hispanic College Fund - The Hispanic College Fund Scholars Program offers a scholarship program for those studying in the field of Medicine. Students must complete the online application, and award amounts vary from $500 to $5,000. Deadline is usually early March. Ida Foreman Fleisher Fund - Administered by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, the Foreman Fleisher fund was established in memory of his mother Ida Fleisher. The fund provides scholarships for the purpose of permitting women, preferably Jewish, to obtain professional educations. Grant distributions can range from $2,000 to $8,000 and are administered by a local bank and customarily sent directly to the student's school to be used for tuition. Deadline: May 1st. Indian Health Service Scholarship - The Health Professions Scholarship Program under the Indian Health Service Scholarship is for American Indian and Alaska Native students, who are members of their Tribe (federally recognized only), enrolled in health professions and allied health professions programs. The Indian Health Service (IHS) is committed to encouraging American Indians and Alaska Natives to enter the health professions and to assuring the availability of Indian health professionals to service Indians. Students incur service obligations and payback requirements on acceptance of funding from this program. Priority is given to graduate students and junior- and senior-level students unless otherwise specified. Health Professions Scholarships are awarded for a one year period (12 months of support), with re-application required for each year of continuation. Stipends are paid for the 12-month period beginning each year from August 1 through July 31 for health and allied health professional education up to four years full-time or up to eight years part-time. Japanese Medical Society of America Scholarship - Applicants of Japanese ancestry, enrolled in an accredited medical, dental or nursing school are eligible to apply. The JMSA is looking for applicant's who demonstrate academic excellence and show a strong interest in the Japanese Medical Society of America. Application, current medical school transcript and at least one of letter of recommendation required. Scholarship amounts have ranged from $2,500 up to $20,000 in the past. Deadline is late December. Greater Lee's Summit Health Care Foundation - The Greater Lee's Summit Health Care Foundation offers up to three scholarships in the amount up to $5,000 to support academic studies leading to a career in a medical or healthcare discipline. Applicants must either live in Lee's Summit currently or have graduated form an area high school, inclduing Blue Springs Hight School, if the student's residence was Lee's Summit at the time of graduation and have at least a 3.0 GPA. LGBT HEART Scholarship Fund - The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Health, Education and Research Trust, Inc. (LGBT HEART) awards scholarships to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender identified students in the health sciences. Each scholarship provides supplemental funding for graduate level students who have a demonstrated ability in and commitment to affecting change in the LGBT communities through their commitment to working and being educated in the health professions. Mary and Melvin Grubb Medical Scholarship - KUMC medical students who are Master Masons and members of the Eastern Star in Kansas; who are children or grandchildren of Master Masons; who are children or grandchildren of members of the Order of the Eastern Star in Kansas are eligible to receive this scholarship award. Dr. John J. Mingenback Memorial Scholarship - The Mingenback family has created a scholarship fund within the Golden Belt Community Foundation for aspiring health practitioners which encourages personal and professional commitment to the community. Applicants must be from Barton County, Kansas, be enrolled (or going to be) at a undergraduate or graduate school, be majoring in a health/medical related field and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. National Health Service Corps Scholarship - The NHSC Scholarship Program is a competitive scholarship open to eligible students in a variety of primary health care disciplines who have career goals that include practicing in underserved areas. Scholarships are awarded in exchange for a student's commitment to practice in a community with a current shortage of health professionals. NHSC Scholars receive payment of tuition and fees for up to 4 years of education; 12 monthly stipend payments per year of scholarship support; and payment of other reasonable expenses, such as books, supplies, and equipment in exchange for their commitment to serve in a community in need. National Italian American Foundation Scholarship Program - The NIAF will award scholarships and grants to outstanding students in the summer for use during the following academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and will be divided between Italian American student who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements and those students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian American students or a related field and who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. The Pisacano Leadership Foundation is pleased to announce that the application for the 2012 Pisacano Scholars Leadership program is now available online at www.pisacano.org. The Pisacano Leadership Foundation (PLF) seeks to advance family medicine by providing well-educated, community-minded leaders in primary care. By aiding students who demonstrate the highest levels of commitment to family medicine, scholarship, leadership, character, interpersonal skills, and community service, the PLF will promote the development of the future leaders in the specialty. The Pisacano Scholars Leadership program is designed to provide educational programs, leadership training, and funding to reimburse a portion of medical-school-related debt. Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding medical students for a four-year period. Students who have made a commitment to the field of family medicine and who will enter their fourth year in medical school in the fall of 2012 may apply. The PLF will award scholarships with a maximum value of $28,000 each for the 2012-2013 academic year. Applications must be received by March 1, 2012 to be considered.
Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society Medical Student Scholarship - In order to encourage students to enter the field of orthopaedic surgery, RJOS provides up to $1500 each to two medical students to attend the AAOS Annual Meeting, including the RJOS Annual Luncheon. Applicants should be current medical students. Application deadline date is early October. Applications completed after this date will not be reviewed until the following year. Tylenol Scholarship - The makers of Tylenol are giving away up to $250,000 in scholarships to students pursuing careers in healthcare. Scholarships from $1,000 to $10,000 will be available for undergraduate and post-graduate study. Applicants will be judged on leadership qualities and academic performance. Vietnamese American Medical Association - The Executive Committee of the Vietnamese American Medical Association has established the VAMA Scholarship Program to: provide assistance to needy medical students, to foster medical students' interest in serving the Vietnamese American community, provide scholastic achievement and to encourage participation and leadership in the Association. The program is open to all third year medical students who are in good standing at an accredited US medical school. The scholarship amount is $1,000. Deadline is August 1. Zola and Lawrence Nell Educations Trust - The Commerce Trust Company. Scholarship amounts vary. Applicants must be studying in the field of medicine and be a graduate of a high school in Sedgwick County, Kansas (i.e., Wichita, Kansas area). Grants and renewals may be conditioned upon such Grantee's engaging in the practice of the health profession for which he/she has received educational support, the period of time and the location of practice (Sedgwick County or the State of Kansas) to be agreed upon on a case-by-case basis. Alpha Omega Alpha Helen H. Glaser Student Essay Competition - Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society instituted this competition to encourage medical students to write creative narratives or scholarly essays relevant to medicine. Authors must be enrolled at medical schools with active AOA chapters (Class of 2012 or later), but need not be members of AOA. Only one entry may be submitted by each student. Prizes: $2,000 first, $750 second, $500 third, and honorable mention awards of $250 each. Deadline for entries is January 31, 2012. Winners will be announced no later than June 1, 2012. The Association of Women Psychiatrists is pleased to sponsor the Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Award. The recipient of the award will be invited to the Annual Meeting (in conjunction with the American Psychiatric Association meeting) in California during the month of May, to receive this award and to present her work. She will receive $1,000 to help defray the expenses of attending the meeting (with any remainder to be used at the student's discretion). The winner will also receive a plaque and be invited to join the award committee for the following year. The award is open to female medical students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, creativity, and leadership. Examples of appropriate disciplines or genres include: service or clinical aspects of medicine; science research; or excellence in art, music, literature, etc. Interested students must be nominated by their medical school. Mensa Education and Research Foundation Scholarship Essay Contest - awards ranging from $300 to $1,000 are made on the basis of an essay of fewer than 550 words, which describes the applicant's career, vocational or academic goals toward which the scholarship is to provide aid. Michael E. DeBakey Medical Student Poetry Award - This annual contest honors the pre-eminent cardiovascular surgeon, pioneering medical scientist, gifted medical educator, prolific author and scholar, and passionate advocate of optimal healthcare throughout the world. Dr. Michael E. DeBakey has long advocated a role for the humanities in medical education and in the development of a full, enriching intellectual life. Submission of original poetry by medical undergraduates currently enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools is welcome. Deadline: late December. Submissions should be sent to: F. Rubin-Glasgow Essay Award - Presented to an AMWA student member for the best essay of approximately 1,000 words identifying a woman physician who has been a significant role model. The author of the winning essay receives $1,000 and a plaque presented at AMWA's annual meeting. Essay should be of publishable quality, typed and double-spaced. Stanley M. Kaplan Essay Contest - Entries may include original research, review articles, case reports or topic essays. Judging will be based on originality, creativity, knowledge of psychiatry and contributions to understanding important problems in any of the biopsychosocial dimensions of psychiatry. The Legible Script, an annual literary journal published by the medical students at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, is currently accepting submissions in the area of prose (to include essays and short fiction), poetry, personal statements and art/photography. William Carlos Williams Poetry Competition - Sponsored by the Human Values in Medicine Program of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Entries must be postmarked no later than December 31. Each participating student is permitted three entries. Poems must be typed on 8.5 x 11 inch paper. Poems must be written in English, cannot exceed 750 words, and can reflect medical as well as nonmedical subjects. The top three poets will be awarded $300, $200 and $100 respectively. William Osler Medal Student Essay Contest - Awarded for the best unpublished essay on a medico-historical subject written by a student enrolled in a school of medicine or osteopathy. Essays appropriate for consideration may pertain either to the historical development of a contemporary medical problem or to a topic within health sciences of a discrete past period. Entries due in mid January. The writer of the winning essay will be invited to attend a conference where the medal will be presented. Young Physicians Patient Safety Award - For the second year, the Lucian Leape Institute at the National Patient Safety Foundation is offering the Young Physicians Patient Safety Award with six prizes of $5,000 each. All third-year and fourth-year medical students and first-year residents who were in a hospital setting as of June 2011 or later are eligible. This award recognizes young physicians for their deep personal insight into the significance of patient safety work. Individuals are invited to submit an essay (500-1,000 words) explaining their most instructional patient safety event - one that resulted in personal transformation. Entries will be judged by NPSF, and six winners of this award will be selected. Each winner will receive $5,000 plus registration and travel expenses to the NPSF Annual Congress in May 2012.
