The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medidicine Award

Grace United Ministries - January 10 & 17, 2009

GHHS members took an opportunity to give back to the community. GHHS students and faculty spent a Saturday installing insulation and drywall and painting at Grace United Ministries in Kansas City, MO.

Grace United Ministries provides an after-school and Saturday tutoring program for area children, meals for the disadvantaged and homeless, AA, NA and other recovery programs, a summer youth program with other initiatives in the works. Volunteers joined the effort to expand the classroom space, improve the dining and pantry areas, cleaning and brightening the building.

M1 Community Service Day – July 31, 2008

Gold Humanism Honor Society Members lent a hand in assisting with the M1 Community Service Day, organized by KUMC External and Alumni Affairs. Laura Thomas, Gold member and 4th year medical student led the recruitment effort with the assistance of fellow GHHS members: Adam Obley, Ebony Copeland, and Ben Williams.  And fellow classmates: Andrew Arther, Andrew Schlachter, Anita Hegde, Courtney Huhn, Elizabeth Rinehart, Cori Anderson, Kara Sloan, Katherine Seymour, Kayron Kelly, Kelly Jo Easley, Kimberly Carter and Robert McCully and the entering school of medicine class of 2012.

Students volunteered with the following projects:

  • Heartland Habitat Restore, sorted donations and restocked shelves
  • Heartland Habitat for Humanity, helped build a house
  • American Red Cross, provided and installed smoke detectors in neighborhood houses
    Rosedale Congregational Church, cleaned and made repairs
  • Wyandotte County Back to School Fair, moved, organized and packed school supplies
  • Cross-Lines, organized and counted school supplies
  • St. Benedict's Child Care Center, painted, cleaned and organized
  • Reach Out and Read, sorted and labeled books and painted a mural
  • Friendship Inn, painted, data entry and yard work
  • Sanctuary of Hope, yard work
  • Cancer Action, boxed and organized materials
  • Wonderscope Children's Museum of KC, sorted, bundled and stocked recyclable materials

Caring for the Community – October 2008

Congratulations to GHHS members Dr. John Dorsch, Dr. Kari Hamlin, Ashley Mathews and John May for their accomplishments.

“Congratulations to the JayDoc Community Clinic in Wichita, which received a Caring for Community grant from the AAMC worth $20,000 over the next four years. Thanks to resident Dr. Kari Hamlin, who was on last year's board, and students Ashley Mathews and John May, who also sat on the executive board, for their work on the grant.”
