Kansas City Class of 2011
Third Year Clinical Track Options

UPDATED January 30, 2009 Class Meeting Handout

Effective June 29, 2009 the third year clinical curriculum will change. Neuropsychiatry will split into two separate courses. Psychiatry and Neurology will both be 4 weeks in length. Family Medicine increases from 6 weeks to 8 weeks in length. Ambulatory Medicine will be dropped from the curriculum and Geriatrics will become a 4 week course.

Listed below are the 11 third year clinical rotation tracks for the 09-10 academic year for Kansas City students. Students may specify their preference to begin their third year clinical curriculum in a 4-, 6- or 8- week clerkship in the Fall semester. Students will be randomly assigned to a specific track based on their preference and course enrollment limits set by each clerkship director.

If you have specific (extenuating) reason for specifying a 4-week, 6-week or 8-week track in the Fall semester (pregnancy, wedding, Philmont in June, July or August, etc.) please follow the link and complete the form.

Final track choices will be due by Friday, February 20, 2009. Results of the track lottery will be distributed by March 1, 2009.

To move from field to field, use the TAB key or the mouse.

Specify Track Choice

Place A, B or C in the blue box below.

Assignments to tracks will be random. To the best of our ability we will honor your preference, however we must adhere to course enrollment limits and, therefore, reserve the right to place students in a non-preferred track. You can only choose track preference A, B or C not a specific course order.

A = 4-week track then 6-week track (Fall) and 8-week track (Spring) - 4-week courses - Neurology, Psychiatry and Geriatrics

B = 6-week track then 4-week track (Fall) and 8-week track (Spring) - 6-week courses - OB/GYN and Pediatrics

C = 8-week track (Fall) and 4- and -6 week (Spring) - 8-week courses - Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Surgery

Clinical Clerkship Orientation (required) - Monday, June 22-Friday, June 26, 2009

EPIC (electronic medical records) training is required prior to entry into the third year. Training dates have not yet been scheduled. You will be advised of when and where as soon as the information becomes available.

Issues in Clinical Medicine is a required lecture series that meets once a month for one to one-half hours during the third year, usually on Thursday afternoons.  This course is designed to deal with issues that cross all clerkships.

Fourth Year = 36 weeks

Subinternship (4 wks) - Choose from: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ob-Gyn, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery or Neurosurgery
Critical Care Selective (4 wks) - Choose from: Anesthesiology, ICU Medicine, CCU Medicine, Neonatology, Pediatrics, Burn Center, Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery or ICU Surgery

Electives (20 wks):  No more than 8 credits of electives from the first two years of basic science can be counted toward graduation credits. A minimum of 12 credits of electives must be clinical/patient care electives.

Clinical Obligations and Holidays

The beginning and ending dates of each third year module is listed above.  Each module begins on Monday at 8:00 a.m. and ends on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.  Holidays are at the discretion of each attending physician for all clinical students.  The rationale is that students are members of the health care team.  They must act and be treated as professionals.  Patient care responsibilities are their priority.  Departments may choose to give their enrolled students "free days" on other state observed holidays, i.e. Martin Luther King, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday following Thanksgiving.  Students are already on break over the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays in both the third and fourth year.
