A Framework For Analysis

Framework for analysis of learning is based on the assertion that it is important for all physicians to develop the skills of self analysis and evaluation. The framework is based on the following:

  • The skill of "stepping outside oneself" to objectively self analyze and evaluate.
  • A comparison of a chemical reaction to a "learning reaction".
    1. A simple chemical reaction can be written as:

    Buffer

    Reactant A + Reactant B --------------------------->AB

    Heat

The following conditions must be met to insure maximum yield of the product, AB.

  • Reactants A and B must be accurately measured.
  • The buffer must maintain the environment of the reaction within tightly controlled parameters such as pH, ion concentration etc..
  • The Bunsen Burner must "motivate" the reaction by bringing the reaction solution to the optimal temperature.
  • Measure of the yield must be accurate.
    1. The learning reaction can be written as:

    Life Environment

Study Skills + Time Management Skills ---------------> Learning (measured by evaluation)

    Motivation

The following conditions must be met to insure the maximum yield of learning.

  • It is important to understand certain principles of the learning process to insure a maximum yield of learning. Once you understand "learning chemistry", you can make adjustments in your personal "learning reaction".
  • Stress management and life management skills are important to the maintenance of consistency in the environment (the buffer) of a medical student's academic and personal life. Perturbations in the environment will increase stress and cause the learning reaction to yield less than it might under optimal conditions. See: Stress Management
  • Motivation is the fire that you bring to your education. It is the desire that has caused each of you to strive to do the best that you can, to sacrifice in order to achieve the goal, to become the best physician that you can be.
  • Skills in standardized test-taking, oral examinations, case presentations and bedside practical evaluations are needed to measure the yield of your learning reaction. The skills needed will vary depending upon your position in the educational program.

Now, step outside yourself and view your "Learning Reaction" and ask whether or not you are getting the yield that you want. If not, analyze the reaction to pinpoint where you feel the reaction can be strengthened. Learning to plan for learning is an important skill to learn. If you wish to seek out personal counseling and help with a qualified counselor See: SOS Connections.
