Interdisciplinary Special Program - 8001

Purpose:

To provide a means for students to pursue a research training experience or a clinical training experience as an elective curricular option usually, but not necessarily, during the summer session (June/Module VI & July/Module VII ) between the 1st and 2nd years of medical school.

Students enrolled in IDSP-800 might include those:

  1. in the Medical Student Summer Research Program (SRP) or in the Center of Excellence Minority Medical Student Summer Research Program (COE-SRP);
  2. not in one of the SRPs but also participating in research at or outside KUMC;
  3. participating in a non-research clinical training experience at or outside KUMC, but excluding students in the Community Health Projects or Family Med. Summer Program.

Administration:

  1. The "Mentor" is the KUMC faculty sponsor or an outside sponsor responsible for the instructional guidance of the Student.
  2. Coordinators: Dr. Joseph Bast, Assoc. Dean,  KUMC Graduate Studies, 5015 Wescoe, 588-6219, jbast@kumc.edu; Dr. Mark Meyer, Assoc. Dean, SOM, 3040 Murphy, 588-1483, mmeyer@kumc.edu; Ms. Laura Zeiger, Assist. Dean, SOM, 3040 Murphy, 588-5290, lzeiger@kumc.edu.

Course Requirements & Procedures:

  1. Mentor completes either the "Research Project Description" or the "Program Proposal for IDSP-800 Clinical Elective" form.
  2. Student submits the ADD Card for enrollment in IDSP-800 for 1-4 credit hours.2
    4 credits = 40 hours/week for 8 weeks (typically the months of June & July);
    3 credits = 40 hours/week for 6 weeks; 2 credits = 40 hours/week for 4 weeks;
    1 credit = 40 hours/week for 2 weeks. Dr. Bast reviews/discusses the proposal and signs for "Advisor's Approval". Ms. Zeiger, reviews/discusses the proposal and signs for '"Dean's Approval.", and will forward the card to the Registrar's Office.
  3. Mentor submits to a Coordinator [for Summer Session, Dr. Bast] a written IDSP Evaluation of Student Performance at the end of the program period.
  4. Student doing a research elective is required to:
    1. Submit a written Abstract of the research project - use the on-line form/format for the Annual Student Research (ASR) Forum and due last weekday in August.3
    2. Make an oral presentation (Powerpoint or slides) of the research project at the next ASR Forum.
  5. Student doing a non-research, clinical training experience is required to:
    1. Submit a written Abstract of the experience.
    2. All "clinical" IDSP-800 students will maintain some form of journal [their choice] during their summer clinical experience(s), which can be used to prepare a 4 to 5 page paper (double-spaced is fine) that presents the most significant/meaningful experience for EACH WEEK of the summer elective. What, why, how, etc. did this particular experience that week have an impact on the student as a medical student, person, and/or future physician, etc. The students who participate in the Swedish Health Care (SHC) course already have a 20-page paper-they will not prepare an additional 5-page paper.
    3. Optionally, a student may prepare a PowerPoint [PPT] "paper" in place of the 4-5 page paper indicated in "B" above. The content would be the same theme as the paper, but the electronic format allows more options for conveying the information.
  6. Final Grade will be issued after all requirements have been met. A grade of "I" (Incomplete)  may be issued by the Coordinator before requirements are completed.
