OPHTHALMOLOGY MATCH REPORT - January 2003

COMPARATIVE STATISTICS

This chart shows results of the match for 13 years. The period is marked by "U" shaped

curves in term of applicant participation. The forces that appeared to be adversely affecting applicant

interest in ophthalmology throughout the mid-1990's have dissipated. The bottom of the "U" occurred

between 1996 and 1998 as observed in the decline in the number rank list participants and number of

unmatched applicants. The avg. USMLE for matched applicants continues to increase. The vacancy

rate (unfilled positions) remains very small. The match is more competitive with 67% match success

rate overall compared to a 76% success rate in 1996. The rate for US Seniors has dropped from

94% in 1996 to 82% in the present match.
