Dr. Zimmerman received a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Minnesota and has done post-doctoral work in epidemiology under an NIH Research Fellowship. She was on the faculty of the School of Medicine at the University of Minnesota – Duluth prior to coming to the University of Kansas in 1982. In addition to her appointment at the Department of Health Policy and Management, she also holds as an appointment as Professor in the Department of Sociology.
Dr. Zimmerman teaches Health Services Research (HP&M 821), Health and Social Behavior (HP&M 835), Women and Health Care (HP&M 850), and Comparative Health Care Systems (HP&M 855) in the MHSA Program. She also teaches a course in Scandinavia in some summer terms, taking U.S. students abroad to learn more about health care systems in another part of the world. Her current research is in the areas of long-term care, social inequality and adverse birth outcomes, and local spending for health care. Her recent publications appear in the International Journal of Health Services, Journal of Ambulatory Care, the Journal of Poverty, and the Journal of Health Administration Education. She has contributed numerous chapters to books.
Dr. Zimmerman has been active in professional service, regionally and nationally. She also serves on many doctoral committees across the University. She was a Fulbright Scholar in 1990 and a 2000-2001 recipient of a W.T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence at the University of Kansas.
